The greatest _pure_ *player* and *shotmaker* to play this wonderful sport. He may not end up as its most successful winner (though he'll be right up there), but he did something much greater than just winning - he singly-handedly _elevated_ the sport by creating and revealing a new aesthetics for it. To put it simply - tennis incarnated itself in the Fed.

@Mike Moggerson There's more to it than that. Fed has a winning record against Rafa on grass and on hard courts. But Rafa killed him on clay. The reason they met so much more often on clay than you would expect (the clay season is only about 18% of the year, but 40% of their matches were played there) is because Rafa was getting knocked out in the earlier rounds of hard court tournaments when he was young, while Fed almost always made it to the finals on clay. That needs to be taken into account. Novak also met Rafa on clay much more often that one would suppose because Novak made it to the clay finals much more often that Rafa made it to the hard court finals. Fed had a comfortable lead in teh h2h against Novak until Fed was in his early 30s, passing his prime. It's after that that Novak caught up. Fed dominated the sport like no one else for five years before the other three (including Murray) came into their own. Look at his win-loss records during those years, and the h2h records between them and Roger. It was amazing domination. Roger had the best "peak" ever, if you consider the peak 3-5 years. But Novak has had the best career, and the weeks at number one prove it. Roger still has more tournament wins and total match wins than the others, and a better overall slam performance than Rafa, who lost in the early rounds more often and got to fewer finals and semis than the other two. Comparing them to Brady or Jordan doesn't work for me. Those are team sports,a nd different from tennis. There is an argument for all three to be considered the GOAT. I give it to Novak at present, but it's just semantics, really.

@Mike Moggerson djoko can't serve/volley. He'd have adapted but I can't see him beating pistol pete. We know fed can, because he did

    • Mike Moggerson
Mike Moggerson 2 bulan yang lalu

@Joe Marshall I agree that at the end of the day, one or two more slams when they all have 20+ means little. However, if Federer was really the goat, he wouldn’t have struggled like he did against Novak and Rafa. You cannot make any excuses for that. The best of the best overcome any adversity and that’s why they’re GOATs. Michael Jordan still dominated in his late 30s. Tom Brady won a Super Bowl at 44 years old. All I hear from Fed fans is EXCUSES when it comes to him getting beat by Novak/Rafa. Federer is comparable to those two, but unfortunately, the head to head statistics and overall advanced stats suggest Fed is the weakest because he had the weakest competition to win most of his titles (of the 3).

Brilliant, thanks for posting. I know there are many more shots and three of my favourites are the round the net shot against Nishikori in the Aus, Open, The trotting backwards shot against Murray at Wimbledon and the 24 shot rally against Nadal in the Aus Open. What an amazing time to be a tennis fan!

Of the Big 3, currently most records are against Federer, but he seems to enjoy the game much more than others. He is willing to play high risk shots, take ball on half volley or even innovate new shots.
Casual brilliance is something you can associate with Federer unlike Rafa or Novak. Kyrgios is another player that comes to mind when thinking of casual brilliance.
Federer game style is like Messi's. Lots of talent and less physical.
Whereas, Novak or Rafa style is like Ronaldo's, where the game is a lot more physical.
    Really miss seeing him play.

@BonSomAnnJen Oh sorry, I was looking at the wrong post. As for Alcaraz, he does seem to play with more effort than Federer, but then again, everyone seems to play with more effort than Federer. We'll see how successful Alcaraz ultimately is, but it's hard to imagine him not winning at least 10 grand slams.

    • BonSomAnnJen
      BonSomAnnJen Bulan Yang lalu

@Nadine Markus I was replying to your comment about the casual brilliance of Carlos Alcaraz. Not sure why you are talking about Nadal.

    • Nadine Markus
      Nadine Markus Bulan Yang lalu

@Boney Johns Considering his foot has been disintegrating this whole time, that's even more impressive. Moreover, winning is what counts, as long as you play fair, which Nadal certainly does. Whether it looks smooth and effortless doesn't matter. At the end of the day, Nadal has won 22 grand slam titles, the most of anyone in the history of tennis. This is what matters.

    • Boney Johns
      Boney Johns Bulan Yang lalu

@Nadine Markus I disagree, because to me it feels like he puts lots of effort into his play. Doesn't look casual/smooth/effortless.

If "greatest" in GOAT refers to legacy, impact on the sport, being the reason why many players decided to turn pros and the reason they fell in love with the sport (the way I interpret greatness) Federer is without discussion the GOAT of tennis. Objectively you could argue that he was not the best and definitely not the most successful or efficient player, but man his greatness is like no other

He is one of the reasons I started watching tennis, just like many others. Also the respect he has for his rivals and the spectacular games he plays against them makes him an admirable sportsman. People might argue about who is the GOAT in tennis, but the bottom line is very few get to this level.

@MKA Nadal leads h2h on federer 24-16, and djokovic leads 27-23. 2006-2014 Djokovic was 5-9 against Federer 2006-2009, and that wasn't even his prime. The truth is with everyone's primes being at different times it's simply just too hard to say who's the greatest of all time.

    • Mike Moggerson
Mike Moggerson 3 bulan yang lalu

@MKA as I said in many other comments, it’s hilarious how Federer fans are finding new ways to cope. I’m sure you will deny it, but his fans were constantly saying how he’s the best BECAUSE of his records. Now since he’s surpassed by two players, suddenly achievements and records are irrelevant 🤣🤣

    • MKA
MKA 3 bulan yang lalu +8

Actually, _nobody_ else in tennis history has got to Federer's level. Some of them have been more successful or efficient perhaps, but Fed is the *only* player in the history of _any_ individual sport to *simultaneously* be that sport's aesthetic touchstone, its greatest shotmaker, and its most prolific winner. (This was during the 2003-2009 period.) Of course, he eventually stopped being the most successful winner, but he remained its greatest shotmaker and will forever remain the sport's aesthetic gold standard.

The reason why Federer is the greatest is his tennis. Incredible though they are, Novak is essentially a defensive player and Rafa is essentially a boxer with a tennis racket. Federer wasn’t just an artist he played ruthless offence. He was a killer with silk gloves. There’s a reason why most players and fans say he was the greatest. It’s because he was.

    • DNAngel

@Angerisdiscipline Prime Federer would mostly beat Prime Djokovic. Until 2013/2014, Federer was ahead in their head to head. Djoker started beating him more consistently after late 2014/early 2015. Plus, I wouldn't call Djoker the Goat since last 10 of his wins came in last 4-5 years which is awesome but we can call it the "weak era" since the best competition he had was an aging federer and a much weaker nadal (other than clay). So if 2003-2007 was the weak era for Fed (where he was fighting aging Agassi and single GS winners) , why can't we call say 2015-2022 the weak era as well ?

@MKA Great reply. Thanks. Honestly, I find discussions (even my own) about which is the greatest of the Big Three to be a bit ridiculous. They’re all such absolute titans. But for me Federer just plays the game how the gods want it to played. I’m more interested in watching the next gens now. Going to be a fascinating few years. Alcaraz is astonishing. And Sinner is his perfect foil and rival, stylistically and technically. Great times ahead :)

    • MKA
MKA 3 bulan yang lalu +5

Too true. The description of Rafa is one of the better ones I've seen...though his racquet skills and talent are not too far behind the Fed. (The Djoker is quite a long way back.) The thing people don't often realize about the Fed is: between 2003-2009, he was _simultaneously_ his sport's aesthetic touchstone, greatest shotmaker, and most prolific winner. No other player in _any_ individual sport has ever done this before. Outside of those years - he still remained its greatest and most inventive _elite_ shotmaker and aesthetic gold standard.

Gotta love Fed in beast mode. Watch the footage from hard courts and Wimbledon until 2008, also the 2015 Dubai final when Fed schooled Djokovic.
Everyone will talk about how Fed won his titles during the "weak era", and conveniently ignore the fact that no one would've come close to his records if they hadn't slowed the courts down so clay court players like Nadal could catch up (after Fed neared/touched his 40s and barely played, of course).

There’s truly something so special about Roger… I’m someone who has never had any interest in tennis or any sport in general and yet by chance I stumbled on a video with Roger playing and I was transfixed?! I knew nothing about the game or its rules or how it should or shouldn’t be played but I just found Roger’s play style so wonderfully aesthetic and fun to watch?! In the little that I‘ve managed to learn about tennis, still no other player has made me feel this interested or fascinated with the sport! He’s in a league of his own when it comes to his style and charisma both on and off court - as he’s such a charming and cute person! Anyway, I hope he has a fabulous birthday, to still be playing and this integral to a sport at 41, it’s nothing short of incredible and inspiring! ❤️

    • codegeek1001
      codegeek1001 3 bulan yang lalu +5

I also believe that Federer is a better player than Djokovic. It is just that once he started going towards mid 30s, he played Djoker a lot more and Djoker got the better of him in close matches. Until 2013, Federer was ahead in their head to head. Yes djoker beat him in 2008 AO which was big but in general, Prime Fed would be much better than Prime Djokovic (in match up). I doubt a 2011 Djokovic would beat a 2005/2006 Federer. Only exception is Nadal on Clay. Fed just has the most versatile and entertaining game. No disrespect to Djoker and Nadal though. They are legends for sure.

@Jonathan Stirling having the most records does not equal being the best. Michael Jordan has some records but not all of them. Does that mean he is the best? Yes because of his play style atheletism. Same here applies for Federer. Stats don’t mean shit when comparing who’s the goat.

I don't believe in the GOAT status, every big player was special in their way. I do believe that Federer is by far the most appealing to watch. He can execute every shot in the book and make it feel like it's nothing too hard. He always tries to invent new spectacular shots, even though he has a bad position in the rally. A true human highlight reel.
PS: Don't start GOAT conversation in this comment, all of them retire at one point and it doesn't feel the same. So just enjoy it while you can.

"I think Federer, out of the other three guys, Federer can make you feel really bad, like he makes you want to leave the court. He can make things seem really quick and that the court's really small."

Over a four-year period, from WTF 2003 to WTF 2007, Federer entered 49 "big tournaments" and won 28 titles. That equals a success rate of *57* %, which is simply mind-blowing.
Though, his most impressive feat might be reaching 18 finals in the 19 Grand Slams played from Wimbledon 2005 to Australian Open 2010. Roger is truly one of the all-time greats. 💯

As much as I appreciate the race for the grand slams, you can't deny that Roger has the greatest hands of all time (GHOAT). Those shots are simply not available to two-handers. The GOAT title rewards the players with the best mentality, efficiency and physique over a career, but the GHOAT title can only reward Federer. He is the GHOAT, Kyrgios second. They both make tennis look like art, easy, they have special and tactical awareness and coordination that just doesn't exist in other players.
