Every trait and constraint of a robot requires a different design, let's keep that in mind when comparing. It's certainly impressive so far, especially the speed of development.

Everything impressive about Tesla's bots are the perpetual promises of what they will be able to in the future. Go look up what Honda did with ASIMO back in October 2000 and how far Boston Dynamics had come with its Atlas humanoid back in 2016. With Tesla's budget, this is downright disappointing.

    • Phyrinx
      Phyrinx Bulan Yang lalu

@SevDev It's called Spot and you can buy it for ~200.000 USD. Sure it'a a fuckton of money, but it's just out of development and pretty unique. At least they are honest about the price unlike Musk.
You really believe (once it comes out after decades) that Optimus will just cost you 20k? After millions of R&D cost etc? It's like the Tesla 3 but much worse.

    • SevDev
      SevDev Bulan Yang lalu

@Alex CZ So what? Still more competition. Also, where can I buy these other robots? And it's still difficult to develop some walking humanoid robot from the scratch. Just because you believe you could do it doesn't mean you could.

The presentation was a bit underwhelming since we are already spoiled by backflipping robots moving much faster.
The thing that Tesla has going for it is the software which they are adapting from their cars for it with its fast object recognition.
But we need to wait and see what the state of that the robot will be when it hits the market.

Perfect occasion to recommend you to look at NimbRo's Cosero solving the same tasks back in 2012 just much faster (on wheels, but Cosero costs a little tiny fraction of one of Optimus' fingers net worth).
That said, this is the first time I see anyone presenting a black faced-robot, surprising since robots are normally white or colorful. Likewise couldn't but notice that all technicians are Caucasians. For real? In Tesla? Aren't rocket-scientists at the tippity-top of the engineering ladder like a weird mix of Indians, Asians, Slavs and Latinos? I normally don't give a single F about that stuff, but after a decade or RoboCup it really looks weird to see that even setup.

"He expects the production model to cost less than $20,000." The myth, the man, the trashtalker. Ignoring the current crisis in semiconductors, making everything 100 times as expensive as before, you still have a shitload of sensors, motors, custom made parts etc. I would not be surprised if the material costs are way above 20.000$ even in mass production. I'd imagine assembly and the overall development costs push this price even higher and then you still have to be somewhat profitable.
Also don't forget, this thing has to improve his performance by a factor of 3 or 4 to be somewhat useable. In the foreseeable future I don't see it replacing even the slowest and dumbest workers you can find...

It’s quite frightening. I really don’t want to live in a world with robots. The scariest thing is to think what a hacker can do with such an IA. You can possibly murder someone with this technology. And when we will set clear limits for technology ? Can’t we have specific boundaries that mustn’t be cross ?
Are we so lazy that we necessarily need IA in our life ?

Honesty, I didn’t think they were going to be this far in progress yet. I was doubtful they would have an actual walking prototype yet, let alone be able to pickup boxes and other objects and move them, tethered or not.

I wonder why they didn't just but Boston dynamics and be done with it. They already have the motion part nailed down, so just plug and play the AI for recognizing objects and You're ready with a product that's good for the market.

I honestly do not like how they keep mentioning that their future robots will only function their motions and their next task through the use of Cloud networks. Like, what if there's no cellular network, or perhaps, any kind of network when you want the robot to work? In an age where anything that fits in the palm of a hand has just as much power as my hp gaming Pavillion desktop, they could just have it be able to make it walk, and do things, while choosing it's motives at the same time without a cloud... unless ad marketers want to track it's motives and commands.
    I have soo many words.

It's a nice start, but there are plenty of robots out there that can walk straight-legged. Walking with bent legs improves the ability to balance but with a lot of energy consumed. It's why humans can walk on two legs all day long and Apes can't. It uses a lot of energy.

Asimo was not connected to a superintelligent AI uplink and didnt have realtime object and persons recognition, not to mention semantics and other latest ML/AI algos. ASIMO is a toy compared to this. This AI will improve at lightspeed and go very fast beyond anything that ASIMO was capable of. Not to mention the finer finger haptics and other things.

Face it, Teslabot 2022 is a massive fail compared to what you fanboys bragged almost a year ago what it would be. Your cult leader said he has the best robot company in the world because his cars are actually robots. Now you face the facts of his laughable two robots.
That would be like Tesla making a cell phone that could not even compete with an old Nokia 3310 🙂 Tesla fanboys always lame excuses when the showed product does not live up to the overhyped promises of your cult leader
