I was an extra in this movie. You can actually see me at 4:44 standing to the left. This movie was such an incredible experience. I was there when they filmed the bathroom scene where she said she had to go to the colored bathroom and it was so amazing watching her work and bring such intensity. They would cut the scene and film again like most productions do and between takes she would joke around telling the director it's a wrap and she was done and they would film again. They kept that up for a few takes and finally on the last take she started dancing around. You could see Kevin Costner was trying not to laugh. He would turn around and go into his pretend office.
They filmed the Nasa scenes in 2 locations. The scenes of the office with the big chalkboards was actually filmed in a high school gymnasium in Atlanta. The other parts of NASA was filmed in an old mental health hospital that has been shut down for years. It's the same place they use for Hawkins lab in Stranger Things. We worked a lot of shows at that old hospital.

@Greg Crews I worked in the inner city for 12 years as a store manager...I always treated them with respect, and was never robbed...they liked me because I treated them fairly...and they were super smart....even the drug dealers who were independent businessmen...I actually liked them for their tenascity and resilance and they told me some of their stories, it was a Hoot...they were just trying to make a living in a crewel world...not harming anyone...someone want's their product....I understand that....supply and demand...these were not the shooter criminals like in Chicago murdering people...these were nice people...

I bought this film as someone suggested I watch it. You should buy this film and watch it. Three black women who helped NASA with their figures to put a man into space. Watch the part where KK and the black woman go into a meeting. KK asks his colleague what the figure is. His colleague cannot find it. The black woman just simply comes out with it and astonishes everyone in the room with her memory. Then she is handed a piece of chalk. Goes up to the board and proves her figures are right. Well worth watching. A good story and it also shows the racism these 3 women had to put up with. I give this film 5 stars out of 5. A damn good film to watch not to be missed. PC. 20. 08. 2022.

Can't watch Jim Parsons without seeing Sheldon, just like I can't watch Dean Stockwell without seeing Al. While these four women were trailblazers in their time, they said that the movie wasn't a true representation of their experience in NASA.
From my own experience, the agency is unique amongst government agencies in two ways: they think of themselves as a family, and they have no problem with people who are trying to help and can prove their point. We see this time and time again in the movies. I saw it firsthand when an outsider was able to convince the agency to stop launch preparation for STS-133 and begin an investigation into why the insulating foam had cracked and fallen off the external tank during a tanking test.

@spaceflight101 can't say I've seen those signs personally in real life, before my time, but still to this day I see attitudes on both sides of I'm right & your wrong, yet they seem to be saying the same thing sometimes. Just irks me that hate & indifference can't get set aside, & it's not just about color of someone's skin, about ideals and/or how to proceed with an idea or project usually. Seems the rift will not or can never heal & just keeps widening. Pains me to think another civil wars on the horizon.

@Fargo Entertaining , the way I see Hidden Figures, FWIW, is of a story in the same vein as October Sky. A group of people, with one central character, had to overcome various obstacles to accomplish their goals.
I've been to Coalwood. In 1957 it was about as isolated as a small town can be.
I've been to Virginia Beach in the early 1960s and seen the "whites only" signs.
You're correct about difficulties in keeping the audience interested and engaged. You may have the best story in the world, but once the audience starts playing with their phones it's game over.

As far as Hollywood goes with accuracy, can't really give them all the blame. I've seen time & time again how sheepishly audiences can get bored, eyes glaze & become disinterested in shows & movies with all facts and little to no drama. Personally, if I'm interested in a subject-like nasa, wouldn't matter about all facts & little to no drama, for quite awhile anyway. Does come to a point where if I'm not involved in any of the actual projects, I'll get bored just listening about it.

It just continues to show racism doesn't just hurt the person suffering under it. It also hurts the country. Maybe if America had looked beyond color Russia wouldn't have gotten an early advantage in the space race. These three ladies were scientific geniuses and because of racism they were waiting in some temporary employment pool to be assigned.

Just once I'd like these people who recap movies to actually know what the hell they're talking about.
On the whole they got this right but her coworker didn't treat her poorly like your portraying.
the document he threw on her desk was redacted, meaning parts of it were blacked out so that she couldn't see them, because she didn't have a high enough security clearance.
Oh and by the way could you keep the story to the actual story and the historical facts behind it rather than pushing an agenda?
    that would be awesome thanks!!
I wish they would teach things like the story of this lady's brilliance and genius but yet it was.....overlooked.

@Ozymandias Ultor arabs are seen as whites. I know in Africa there was tribalism mainly until people of other race decided to capture regions of North Africa then ventured into Central Africa looking for wealth.

    • Ozymandias Ultor
      Ozymandias Ultor Bulan Yang lalu

@James Rivers Who brought it? It was always there, you think the whole of Africa was free of racism? Racism in one form or another, on one level or another always existed. And it seems you connect racism with slavery right away... I am of Slavic origin... do you know the etymology of the word "slave" in the English language? It comes from Slav, Slava means "glory" in all Slavic languages, but obviously, Slavs were subjected to so much enslavement that it became the root of the word "slave". And you will not find too many whiter people than Slavic... And again, who brought racism? Sure, many white people were racists, but so were Arabs, do you know what was Mohamed trading with and how he called black people? I can't write it because of the algorithm but connect the words "raisin" and "heads"... What do you think, who was talking slaves in Africa, white people were going or other black people or above mentioned with his tribe did that dirty business for 14 centuries? Besides, no one had to bring it, in Africa the diversity is very big, and racism already existed. You have a very simplified picture in your head, and just simply repeating that mantra about how others are racists and some are not, well that is simply not true. there is white racism, but there is black racism too, and black people were taking other black people as slaves and selling them. Things are never simply black and white. Things are mostly grey nuances.

This isn't sports, where you review the game and add your two cents.
"I'm gonna explain this movie... because you are dumb, and I'm the only one who gets it."
Why is it that, when they make any movie... IT'S NEVER NARRATED with an EXPLANATION? Why is that?
When you left the theater... was there someone in the lobby, asking.. "Did you get it? Was it too hard to understand?"
Don't you think that anyone can watch this movie, and understand it, on their own?
I could understand if the dialog was cryptic, with never-ending plot holes, and vague storylines.
Having said that... can't you give your audience just a little credit... at least for knowing how to use a computer, a smartphone?
And how can you be certain that YOU actually understood it?

The movie uses this to show what has happened. In fact the bathroom experience was Mary Jackson's experience. As the story is told most from Kathleen perspective, it falls onto her story line to demonstrate much of the implicit and explicit biases that were being faced by black women

Building wealth involves developing good habits like regularly putting money away in intervals for solid investments. Financial management is a crucial topic that most tend to shy away from, and ends up haunting them in the near future. Putting our time and effort in activities and investments that will yield a profitable return in the future is what we should be aiming for. Success depends on the actions or steps you take to achieve it. "You're not going to remember those expensive shoes you bought ten years ago, but you will remember every single morning when you look at your bank account that extra 0 in there. I promise, that's going to be way more fun to look at everyday", I pray that anyone who reads this will be successful in life

It must be one of the most generic Hollywood films i've heard of in quite a while. This film is basically another benchmark for the political correctness movement. nothing more than a quota for the triple A "film industry". For them, it's something to fill in the blank spots in the pursue for the public agenda.

The accomplishments of these women and their contributions and accomplishments toward the advancements in their chosen fields is monumental.
HOWEVER. Watch this movie with a grain of salt at hand. Hollyweard, as usual, has added and subtracted from the truth for their own purposes.

*** I should have said "a shaker full of salt"!!!

    • Cardinal R G
      Cardinal R G 15 hari yang lalu

Well said. Hollywood can’t be trusted with true stories. For example, NASA was never segregated, only the predecessor organization (NACA) was. But screenwriters need villain to be as splashy as possible, so NASA gets blamed for something it never did. The movie also features invented, hybrid characters, because it doesn’t trust viewers to assimilate plain facts. Lastly, Catherine Johnson never had to walk the better part of a mile to a segregated bathroom. That’s a fable that actually diminishes her bravery. In real life, Johnson merely ignored the rules and used the same bathroom that the white women did. She did not stoop and give into the racism, she defied it with strength and resolute dignity. It’s an illustration of that strength that no one ever tried to stop her. Naturally, Hollywood’s version requires a fictional, white savior to come in and tear down the sign. It’s a disgraceful distortion of the story of Johnson and the other wonderful women that the movie is supposed to be about.
