  • A presentation by Grace Chen, MD
Last year, Dr. Chen explored how some of the common chronic diseases, such as diabetes and heart disease, can be treated with lifestyle changes. This year, she will speak about her experiences working with patients at ʻEkahi Health System’s Dr. Ornish’s Program for Reversing Heart Disease™. In addition, she will delve into some of the less well-known benefits of a plant -based diet. She will talk about arthritis and other auto-immune diseases, such as asthma and skin conditions in this lecture.
Grace Chen, MD, is a board-certified emergency physician with a special interest in lifestyle medicine. After observing many preventable chronic diseases in the emergency room, she was inspired to create a website: 365 Days of Graceful Living at graceinhawaii.com, dedicated to educating people about how chronic diseases can be prevented through lifestyle changes. She films her IDclips videos in the beautiful outdoor environment of Hawaii. In her free time, she enjoys experimenting with new recipes, tending to her garden, swimming in the ocean, and scaling mountains! She also loves the serenity of practicing yoga.
Note: We share the building with a ballroom dancing group, sometimes when their music is extra loud you may hear it in the background.

Loved it. I disagree without the title. Mountains of evidence (peer reviewed, double blinded and communities) stand for why a plant based diet is healthy for humans. Miracles' are generally accepted as: 'events not explicable by natural laws'. Leave that term for the religious people.

Giving up meat was quite easy for me but sugar is another matter. A piece of Godiva chocolate and my pleasure center lights up like a Christmas tree. I've cut back but on occasion I'll binge. Any advice out there?

I am convinced that vegetarian and vegan diets are the way to go but it's true that some vegans do not look all that healthy.

Great presentation. I'm happy you mentioned the beer with Gout because I have first hand experience with that. It was certain beers (Corona at the time) that brought on the gout in my big toe. I was fairly healthy vegan diet at the time but had been drinking more beer than usual. Never had gout in my life and never had it again after that one time. Drank lots of water and it went away within a few days. So yes beer and even white flour products can cause an issue.

The doctor may be incorrect about cirrhosis. There is evidence that Milk Thistle can reverse the disease.

What do you think a vegan looks like? I consider myself vegan, but I am no where near skinny. I think she looks great, too. There are a lot of really unhealthy skinny people out there, too.

Vegan means no use of animal products. The rest (oreo cookies, ice cream, french fries, candy) is still on the table.

Vegan does not equal a healthy diet. Also the duration a person spent eating a poor diet along with other factors will be at play

yea i hear you. im sure with some dill or maybe chili pepper or something you could make a decent flavor with just cashews and little or no salt. sometimes i miss cheese but its really not that great either.

An excellent presentation about how a plant-based diet can create profound changes for every day people. I am sharing this on my FB wall! Thank you! I'm about ready to start a chapter of the Vegetarian Society of Hawaii here in Utah. :-)

Don't tell any of this to the low-carb doctors; they'll label you a fraud, ironically enough.
