Use a pallet carousel like an old several thousand pounds they spin around, put it on the left and boom. You have a way to spend your car and go up and down.

For the car elevator bit, you could re-engineer a telescopic forklift mast mounted to the wall for vertical lift. Instead of forks have a gear driven rotary table mounted on its own telescope, so it can slide in and out horizontally. Also for multi-car use, have 2 platforms stacked on one another. First car comes down and is pulled to the side with cables or whatever, leaving a second platform for a second car to come strait down.

    • Nadeau Marc
Nadeau Marc 6 jam yang lalu

Remember good old "Thunderbirds"? The route used by the number "1" rocket when it went from the Tracy Island cave to under the pool was in an angle. Same principle could be used to slide the car when it goes to the basement. Once in place, time for a little 180 degrees rotation.

    • Daniel Crist
Daniel Crist Hari Yang lalu +2

@Zero Time I didn't mean "keep it simple" as a general rule. I just meant in this case, he could keep to a more simplified design type while gaining increased utility/functionality from this area of the structure by using the rotary platform to load and unload cars while in the underground garage bay. In this manner, he could store up to 3-4 vehicles underground at once.
I just meant that before elaborating on a design you should always wait and think to determine if you've gotten maximum functionality out of an earlier stage of a design.
I don't dislike your idea, I was just proposing an alternative.

    • Zero Time
Zero Time Hari Yang lalu +1

@Daniel Crist What about Colin is simple lol. I was trying to make it automated. Press a button and the car disappears.

    • Daniel Crist
Daniel Crist Hari Yang lalu +1

Keep it simple - with the rotating platform vehicles could drive on and off of the platform from the subterranean garage when rotated perpendicular to the driveway, allowing 2-3 cars to be parked off to the left side of that room/garage (left from our perspective) - then they could just easily drive onto the carousel, rotate 90 degrees, and then be lifted up to the surface level. No need for multiple platforms on the lift.

    • Zero Time
Zero Time Hari Yang lalu +1

Imagine a "L" shape, of hydraulics. The vertical part of the "L" is for lifting, and the horizontal is where the car would sit on the platform.

Now I know the whole point of this was to do it “secretly”. But man I can’t stop thinking about how much more cost and time effective this would’ve been to do by just digging up your yard again and installing the tunnel, filling with concrete around it, then backfilling. Sure, the parts that go under the shed and the house and what not you’d have to do the way you’re doing now from underneath, but man the time savings you would’ve had by being able to just do it with an excavator from above for the large chunk of it would have been insane.
Again, I know that wasn’t the point, and it wouldn’t have been as cool to watch (still cool but not as cool), but man at a certain point I’d personally have said fuck it and went from above. I mean this project is what, like 2/3 done? And it’s been how long? Over 2 years of digging? Insanity lol. I give you guys HUGE props for this lol

Maybe some sort of railsystem with a turnable platform similar to a horizontal elevator like the one in germany above the trainstation.
Such that the platform drives a vertical slightly horizontal curve down into the batcave and can turn there.
A pair of rails is connected to the right facing side and another to the left, such that the Platform is always held horizontal when moving down and a bit to the side.

The "easiest" solution for the car ending up off the side would be to have the scissor lift work at an angle instead of straight up and down. That raises a whole bunch of other issues, unless you separate the roof of the lift from the lift itself and have it on it's own mechanism.

Use hydraulic pressure to move it up and down.. put sensors down below to detect if its the front part of the car or the back , if the back than it will move slowly like a roller coaster would, to the side and move up a couple inches then turn around so it will face forward then move back like a roller coaster on tracks and the sensors will redetect, the code for the sensors will be such as to repeat every X (the variable X is for how long it would take to do the previous steps of turning around times 1.25x so if it would take a minute then it would redo the detection sensors in a minute 15 seconds after the detection sensors have detected it was the back). The way it would turn, I'm not sure of yet but I can infer some system of a piston pushing from one end to another or like in the olden times how the had a person moving a wheel to open the draw bridge but this time you could you gears and an engine. I assume you'd like it to be covered when the car is underground turning which all I have to say is a pully system so when the car is pulled down, a floor system would be pushed across, but when the cars coming up, the floor system would be pulled back. One flaw in The pully system is that You'd probs have to create another above ground building (almost like the gap of a road to its side walk) to keep the floor system in along with the pully system, basically you'd need to make a half sized bunker for everything.

You (In my opinion) really need a window with lighting behind, to 'show' the rock while in the Garage. Does not have to be large, but something for looking 'outside' I guess. Cause everyone needs a window in their Garage! I also think you should include a sump pump for emergency evacuation of water just in case. While you can still include it into your design for if a leak or flooding were to occur. Love what you have completed there. Just amazing!

    From-the-Brink 5 hari yang lalu

Hey Colin! I have a suggestion for the car platform "round house". Hopefully I can be descriptive enough. This explanation assumes the front of the car is towards the house initially. 1. Imagine two rectangular platforms with curved corners stacked about a meter apart to house the "magic" apparatus in between and standard scissors lift on the bottom. 2. When lowering, the platform "sandwich" stops at a point where the lower part is flush with the floor. 3a. The top platform pivots near the rear of the car so that the front swings wide to the left. 3b. The end of the platform that swings out onto the floor has wheels on the bottom that are angled (or very heavy duty casters maybe), to track the needed radius. 3c. The pivot end of the platform has a monster bearing (think giant lazy susan), which has it's own rotational drive. That rotation apparatus is mounted on a track that spans the length of the platform. (I'm thinking maybe rack and pinion coupled with a huge cog under the pivot to accomplish both the rotation and travel at once.) 3d. So, the front of the car platform swings out to the left, rolling, while the rear of the car simultaneously rotates 180 degrees as it travels to the other end of the lower platform. 4. Once rotation if complete, then the "sandwich" lowers the rest of the way until top platform is flush. You can always rig this up to engage the turning cycle later too, so you can get out right away. I was just thinking that pneumatic wheels on the swing end would be easy but some sort of recessed track would probably be better. Of course, the simpler solution would probably be to just have the turntable on the surface with the drop-away rectangle platform in the center. Anyway, that's what I pictured in my head when you asked for ideas. I get crazy sometimes. Thanks! - Dale

For the turntable you could repurpose the slew (spinny bit) from an excavator or a crane. They're compact units that can hold a lot of weight. Then you could find a way to mount that onto your scissor lift and slide it side to side.

The plans to have a subterranean driveway are exceptionally exciting! I think it would be way cooler if you were to have the scissor lift or whatever you end up going with in the garage. Get an automated garage door, drive in, close door, lower down to subterranean driveway bunker, park. You could still have a turntable, but you might only need one that turns 90 degree's as you'd be able to then park two cars at a 90 degree angle to where the road is. That way, it's a concealed entrance, which is waaaaaaay cooler! Loving all of your work and been an avid follower since before you even got onto the bunker stuff. Keep being a legend!

My Suggestion for Reversing the Car: Reverse (the Car) before you send it down. Move the platform up a few inches, rotate the platform and then lower the platform. This you will have room to spin the car without the near wall getting in the way. You might also be able to get two lifts side by side this way.

For the car lift you could have a cork screw platform which could offset itself in the tunnel room so that when it returned to the surface it was turned 180°

  • Brigadier

Well done so far on your tunnel, digging it by hand. amazing feat!!

  • Dan G
    Dan G Hari Yang lalu

    My thoughts on the lift.
A single cylindrical piston pushing a platform from below. If that piston had a pair of matching helical grooves machined into it, they could rotate the car AS it was descending by riding on guide pins or wheels. Then, on the ascension, the guide pins which facilitate the rotation would disengage so the car elevates straight up without spinning.

  • Dave
    Dave Hari Yang lalu

Rotating the car without moving away from the wall is easy enough when you consider that a half-rotation in one axis is the same as a half-rotation in each of the other two axes.
Just be sure you strap it down real good first.

  • Geraint Davies
Geraint Davies 8 hari yang lalu +502

Two things I would be really worried about:
    1) water ingress into the car port, how do you seal the floor as much as possible, and drain any water that makes it's way in, avoid rust and corrosion, damp staying in the basement part etc.
    2) MAKING THE LIFT SAFE TO BE AROUND.
I've read too many heavy machinery horror stories where people get caught in conveyors, lifts etc.
I know you've probably already given it thought, but making sure this thing is practically infallible when it comes to people messing about with it, or in the worst case when the kiddos inevitably want a shot, would be my most invested effort.
    Nice tunnel anyways.
