How much does memory affect gaming?? Tested

  • Dipublikasikan tanggal 21 Okt 2019
  • We tested multiple configurations of memory on three different titles to see how memory affects gaming. These results may surprise you.

If I was going to recommend a cpu bound game I would have suggested Arma 3. Let's get some thumbs up so Jay can see this. I would love to see a video on what setup would give you the most fps in Arma 3

Final Fantasy XIV. I have 3200 tridentz royal you can overclock it to 3400 with no problems with two slots, as soon you have all four slots and overclock it, it won't boot up. Any reason why? I have a msi m7 x470 board with 2700x cpu water cooled ,msi seahawk 2080 gpu, power supply 1000w evga. Please and Thank You.

And to be honest as long as your memory bandwidth is efficient enough then a 2fps average difference won't make much difference in the real world.

Allot. if you don't remember what game you are playing , it gets messed up. you gotta remember what stuff your tune need's or need's to do. Yeah memory is big. there are buttons to push and those buttons do stuff. takes memory. get your memory up grade at Dr.Frankenwrench grab a set of 4 K eyeballs while you are there.

Jayz, almost all budget builds in my country prefer 3000C15/3200C16 Ballistix Sport kits. Because most budget builds contain Ryzen (and it likes fast memory). And it's cheap (~$41/stick).
Also 4 sticks on 2-channel-only mobos (consumer CPUs like AMD Ryzen and Intel Core) is stupid because it increases memory controller load and decreases overclocking potential.
It is useful only on Xeon/Threadripper CPUs. Because with 4 channels memory you can get same or better performance even on lower clocks.

And you didn't test 16 GB 2x8 dual vs 4x4 dual.

Interesting video. I remember watching a Gamers Nexus video awhile back that said single vs dual channel didn't matter. Maybe it's different for different games. I've been rocking a single channel 16GB 3200mhz stick of RAM for the past 2 years, just recently bought a 2nd one to have dual channel 32GB 3200mhz. Pretty excited about the upgrade. :-) Oh! and the price of the stick of memory I bought like halved from the time I bought the first one, lol

Did you do the follow up for memory speed yet? I tested WoW in legion and i didnt see much difference between 2400 and 2933 ram but on the other hand 100mhz to cpu core clock made a pretty big difference (obviously i was also in a cpu bound area of the game).

OH WOW, im costing myself an average of 25fps with how my memory is installed, I knew it was costing me but I didn't think it was that much, and to clarify, yes I have 16 gigs of either 3000 or 3200 in single channel, ive meant to switch to dual channel forever now but ive always put it off and ive never gotten around to it

So for some reason my MB never worked with slot 1 and 2. so I've been running single channel in slot 3 and 4 and in all tests I've done my RAM scores are like 1st percentile aka absolute dogshit. How do I know if it's my cpu not recognizing the slots or my MB that's broken? would suck to buy the wrong thing.

    Try to test "Apex Legends"
Now I've been having a problems with GPU and CPU usages and fps drops in "Apex Legends" as I have only one 8GB DDR4 stick in my main PC, paired with G4560 & r9 280x playing at 900p.. So I'm curious if that's cause of the game or actually my Pentium is dead for 2019... Now I don't have the hardware to test and have to wait till can buy another RAM stick

I spent my Cents on a old but yet expensive 16GB @ 2400MHz of DDR3 RAM (Avexir 1.65v) in a hope that I could fire them up to 2800MHz with Oc on my Asus P8Z77V DELUXE with i7-2600k and guess what?!? My 2nd Gen CPU is limited to a lousy 2133MHz so I paid a very expensive money to learn that. Thank you Intel.

If I have 2 pairs running dual channel, but add another 2 more in the remaining slots that are not matched and won't run in dual channel mode, will the first pair still get the speed benefit of dual channel? Or will the whole system slow down to single channel mode?

It would be interesting to see if or when, the technology would allow a single stick to be either single channel or split to dual channel.
It would of course entail ram, board, and cpu makers all working on it. Maybe it's already been tried and proven futile? Octo

I would like to see some benchmarks on iRacing, dirt & asphalt oval.....
There are alot of people that are getting into iRacing with no fps info as per certain graphics settings (also how the settings affect the fps). At least there aren't many useful videos that I have found.
Would be nice to have more info to make more informed choices on hardware that we purchase.
Ok, maybe this isn't as much about ram as it should sorry about that....

So the conclusion is that unless you are running monitoring software you likely aren't going to notice the difference during actual gameplay.
That I think would have been an interesting test. Get PCs together with the different configs and get someone to try and guess what configuration of RAM each PC is using.

I know the RTX2080Ti was chosen to increase the CPU bottleneck likelihood, however having a lot of VRAM can sometimes help builds with less system memory. It might be interesting to have a GTX1060 3GB and GTX1060 6GB card tested along with your DDR4 configurations to see if that changes the recommendation at all. A bit tricky to test that though I'd imagine.

    *small point*
Jay doesn't mention it's an INTEL build until the end of the video. That's an important point because AMD would perform relatively worse with less DDR4 bandwidth (I thought it might have been AMD at first).
