FWIW, I've started sourcing the components for one of these for a project. My plan is very simple, load Linux (probably Debian) and then offload some of photo resizing to it. Occasionally we have to resize 20-30,000 photos in one hit, watermark them for the website, and then watermark another copy for customer download. Our Macs can easily handle the jobs at about 500-1000 per 10 minutes, but I just think it could be fun to throw a 64core machine at the problem. And I'll be honest, this is not a problem that needs solving, this is just something fun.
But I am just so intrigued at so many cores, and to be honest, I'm already trying to figure out how to break 64 cores (without breaking the bank).

And then less than 2 years after this build, AMD was like “ hey, that’s an interesting idea, let’s design a 64 core EPYC cpu which is not only useful but more powerful on a single socket “

I have several older server systems that I got cheap from ebay. No, these are not what you want to use for gaming (yes I tried and it actually did ok), but my Dell R610 with dual Xeons with 12 cores total gives my 8700k machine a serious run for its money in anything multithreaded, like video rendering. And it cost $300 versus almost $2000. Plus it has 72 GB of RAM, hardware RAID support, and dual redundant PSUs, so there's that.
I bought this a few years ago. Also power usage is 180-200 watts idle, 350 watts at load. Not horrible, could definitely be worse.
BTW this same system would be cheaper now. Probably $150.

So... you can buy one of these motherboards with 64gb ram 4 CPUs and 2800 watts of power supplies for $275 + $50 shipping inside a nice rack mountable case... why would you build it in parts like that? I mean the ram and the CPU configuration is crap on that $275 setup but... you are at $275 before ram and CPUs

That system would work great for my workload needs and blow my 12 cores out of the water, and the software was built around these CPUs.

      cdreid99999 Bulan Yang lalu

@Galo of course. My 1700x 8 core will blow one away for moat things. But a 64 core system w tons of ram generating web pages or for virtualisation for 400 bucks is pretty neat

    • Galo
      Galo Bulan Yang lalu +1

@cdreid99999 not rhe same performance, those old servers cpus have a bunch of numa nodes instead of one or two, and also they don't have much cache

The Price on those threadrippers is OUCH t hough. You can buy an old 64core server for about 25% of what a 32core threadripper cpu alone costs. Unfortunately the xeon will be bottlenecked of course but for things like web servers etc the xeon would be cool to have

LOL, this is so bad now. Pause the video at the Cinebench R15 results, and you get i9 7900X (2146) [10 core 20 thread] performance matched by the 2019 R7 3700X (2121) [8 core 16 thread] desktop replacement R7 1700x. The price of the new R7 3700X is also only about $330 + $150 for Mobo. Even the Thread Ripper (3,016) gets its ass handed to it by the 2019 desktop parts such as the R9 3900x [12 Core 24 Threads] that delivers an impresive performance step around (3200). What a diffrence a couple of years make.

Chicks with coloured hair aren't the best it people, you would have seen them more often providing it services. You seem to base you knowledge on modern TV series.
The fact I don't give a shit about your comments or male feminists is not inability to argue my statement it's a statement of my beliefs.
When you speak about the facts I gear your hurt feelings.

For consumer budget workstations, a single Opteron should suffice and would likely show similar results in up-to-16-threads software anyway. It would be far cheaper and you could even find a decent ATX board for it.
