Real Doctor Reacts to THE GOOD DOCTOR | Medical Drama Review | Doctor Mike

  • Dipublikasikan tanggal 15 Apr 2018
  • Wow! Thank you so much for supporting the Real Doctor Reacts to series. I said that if you get the grey's anatomy video to 15k likes I'll do another episode and you CRUSHED it by getting it 200k+ likes. I dove into the comments section to see what medical tv drama you wanted me to review next and it seemed like the good doctor was the obvious choice. Get ready TV Doctors, because Dr. Mike is coming for you =]
Full disclosure, I have never watched an episode of the good doctor on ABC so I decided to go ahead and start my tv medical drama review off with the first episode ( good doctor 1x01 ) of the series. I was really curious myself to see if the good doctor is a medically accurate show.
I really did enjoy this medical tv show because I think it did a lot of things well. It gave an interesting look into what life is like a for a surgeon and a resident. Being a surgical resident is not an easy job and to make the situation even more complex Dr. Sean Murphy has autism so they did a great job of breaking down these circumstances.
I hope you enjoy this episode of Real Doctor Watches The Good Doctor / Real Doctor Reacts to the Good Doctor. If you want me to continue making this tv medical drama series please like the video and leave me a comment on which medical tv show or episode you'd like for me to review next. Love you all!

mike. i dropped a glass bowl while putting up the dishes a year or two ago now, a shard of glass went about an inch into my thigh and i pulled it out right there in the kitchen, i didnt feel it go in, come out, or at all until the doctor poked it to put stitches in it. probably shouldnt have done so, but we did put pressure on it with a towel until we got to the ER. took them like a half hour to call us back to get it fixed lol

I had a big piece of glass in my foot, like my heel. I took it out and there was no blood....... I was really scared. We put a cloth on it just in case, and then as I was sleeping I guess, it started to bleed and there was blood all over my bed.... Lets just say, I thought I was dying...... and I screamed, and I swear I heard my light bulb break...

100% of surgeons that have operated on me have horrible people skills/bedside manners! Have become used to it because I know they put their efforts into surgery. However, I’ve been botched by 2 surgeons & they obviously weren’t good enough surgeons to get away with bad people skills. But, having as many rare genetic mutations as I do (FAP & a connective tissue disease that mimics sticklers & marfans) can’t really be too picky lol! Bound to have a few botched surgeries when you have multiple surgeries a year.

When you say not to remove an object like a knife, large piece of glass, ect from yourself or another person, is that object essentially acting as a plug keeping you from bleeding out?
I've always always heard that if a person falls or passes out/faints and hits their head or hurts themselves somehow and is unresponsive and obviously unable to get up by themselves that you should just call an ambulance and not touch or move that person, just sit/stay right with then until paramedics arrive? I guess the only situation it would be okay to move the person would be if the location they where laying was a possible danger to them? Like in a road way where they could be hit by a car?

Back in the middle of November, when I was diagnosed with TTP, they put a pick line in my femural artery. It wasn't the best place, but it was what that ICU did in emergencies.
I got my Plex treatements, and I was doing considerably better by the third day of treatement. To be safe they gave me five days. A couple of weeks of observation, and they could finally be confident enough I wouldn't relapse right away that they decided to take out the line. What they didn't think about (and I should have waited, I was just excited to finally have the thing out as it was prone to leaking if I moved the wrong way) was the fact that I had taken laxatives a half hour before hand... you are probably already picturing what happened, and you're probably wrong, it was probably worse.
They took the line out, and about ten minutes later, I had to go the the bathroom, diorreah(can't spell that word and my spell check broke) badly. So I asked if I could go. The nurse told me to wait at least ten minutes after she leaves. This entire time, she was holding pressure on my open artery to help close it, as you're supposed to do. I listened to her. In all I had waited a full (plus give or take five extra minutes) so I got up to use the washroom. Walking was fine, and I was VERY careful, but it didn't matter. As soon as I started going to the bathroom, I also started bleeding out... badly. I put a tissue and pressure on it, and rang for the nurse. I didn't want to alarm them too much, so I just said I needed a nurse badly. So one sauntered in after a few seconds, opend the bathroom door, and by this point there was blood EVERYWHERE and me just sitting there, holding pressure, forcing myself not to freak out. But I had absolutely no claim on her calm. And apparently neither did she. She started yelling down the hall "she's bleeding out, she's bleeding out!" A slew of nurses came running, along with my nurse of course, and so did the doctor. People started blaming me at first, and they were talking about how it was so stupid to get up right after getting a line out. At this point, only my nurse was in the bathroom with me, holding pressure, while the floor doctor was running around getting supplies for when I was able to get back in bed, and the other nurses were all still gossiping outside my door.
My nurse, I guess, could see my expression change or something. I felt guilty that I had raised such a commotion, and that I shouldn't habe gotten up. She said "ignore them, this is not your fault" while making sure to hold my gaze. I nodded and felt instantly better. I replied with: "I'm sorry, I just really had to go. I took laxatives.... I waited the full ten extra minutes, more even. I watched the time cause I really had to go." She said "I know you did." I worked on.. er... finishing up, and that was when I realized I had blood all over my hands. Being the "comedian" I am, I just looked at her and said "out out damn spot?"
We both had a good chuckle before cleaning me up and getting me to bed. They put a big sandbag weight on me for an hour after that, and my doctor apologized for not asking me if I had to go to the bathroom before hand, and that floor now has a policy that if a parient is getting their line out, they are requqired to ask them about the bathroom. I called the sand bag, the "stay put stick" although it was more brick shaped really.
How this relates to the video? When they were staunching the flow from the kids artery, in my mind, I said "out out damned spot!" Lol

What is “normal”? Make conversations seem more “normal”, is kind of offensive. Saying something isn’t typical, or isn’t the standard is fine. But saying something isn’t “normal” is kinda offensive.... ): I have a 16 year old son with autism.... autism advocates speak up when someone says something isn’t “normal”. Because with the amount of special needs in the human race, we shouldn’t be calling things normal and not.

That part about "early intervention" for autism really made me uncomfortable. First of all that phrase makes it sound like a disease or a problem like alcoholism or something, and second it sounds like he's talking about ABA (applied behavioral analysis) which is essentially institutionalized child abuse. What they do is basically they train the child like a dog to force them to mimic "normal" behaviors, to ignore their own pain and discomfort just to spare neurotypicals the discomfort of having to interact with someone who is behaving "abnormally". For autistic people, some things can hurt us that doesn't hurt other people, like not just be uncomfortable, when I'm extra sensitive I can't look at certain things (like computer screens) because it hurts too much. Imagine you took a regular child and forced them to repeatedly do something painful (like hold their hand in ice water) until they learn to suppress their reaction, and say "this child is no longer feeling pain, I have helped the child!" no, that's not how it works. ABA DOES NOT help autistic people, ABA is not for the benefit of autistic people, it's only there for "regular people" or as I like to call them "people with regularness".

    • Agnes Sterner Allén
Agnes Sterner Allén 4 hari yang lalu

+Sky Castrum And that's mostly how ABA works, it forces autistic people to try to use tools they simply do not have (like for example the ability to comfortably look someone in the eye), and denies them the tools they do have just because they're not the usual ones (autistic children are prevented from stimming even though it usually helps with focusing, can be a more natural way for autistic people to communicate and interact with the world than speech, and helps agains sensory overload and anxiety)

    • Agnes Sterner Allén
Agnes Sterner Allén 4 hari yang lalu

+Sky Castrum True, but just as true for neurotypical people. The way I think about autism and other developmental "disorders" is they're all just different starting points, everyone is born with a certain set of prerequisite "skills", or a certain potential, and the set that neurodivergent people get is simply a less common one.
I like to imagine it like if you are playing a video game and at the start you get a certain set of tools. But they're not the ones everyone else gets, so if you look up a guide on like how to make a fire or something it just says "just use your matches", and you're like "but I didn't get any matches, I have this magnifying glass though, I should be able to make a fire with that" but when you try you just get a pop up that says "that's not how you're supposed to light a fire", and you're never able to use your magnifying glass, even in situations where it should be useful, because the game is not built with your tools in mind.

    • Sky Castrum
Sky Castrum 4 hari yang lalu +1

“Early intervention” does seem like poor wording. It’s a bit too similar to other issues with a more negative connotation. That said, autism “is” a developmental issue, and we do most of our developing earlier in life. “Autistic symptoms” are the result of everything which makes up the life of an autistic person, with the autism mainly working as a lens. Having solid learning experiences early on in life can help a lot in navigating life later.
Fundamentally, I feel the same as you about ABA. It’s gotten far better than it used to be, but at it’s core is still the concept of reward and punishment, seeking only to create behaviors. That works great for animals, but for a person to learn they need to truly understand. It would be the same as memorizing a mathematical formula, but knowing nothing of why it works.
