that what is most terrifying about the donkey transformation in pinochio it was that is a real allegory of child labor, prostitution and real human trafficking.

I would have swapped Beauty and the Beast's wolf attack or Little Mermaid's transformation with Mufasa's death, which was much more devastating than those two.

You can easily make a psychological portrait of each people. Based on which part traumatized them the most. And our modern times paranoia too. Personally, the part that made me cringe the most after Ariel’s « transformation », was that she ended up being countless feet under water, with human lungs...😶

What’s scarier about Hunchback of Notre Dame is that gargoyle comic relief aside, the plot is pretty realistic for a Disney film. The religious persecution is something that resonates throughout history, authority figures using religion to enforce their own opinions on the population. Frollo is a terrifying antagonist because he believes himself so righteous that his is the final word and in the worst of his madness, with Paris on fire, he even believes himself above God!

The Transformation scene in The Princess And The Frog. A voodoo amulet is used to get some of Prince Naveen's blood, which fills it.

I’m a vegetarian because I saw Bambi when I was 5 in 1965 and hate circuses because I saw Dumbo at around the same age. My kids watched a lot of Disney but we didn’t let them watch Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, (terrifying depiction of women in authority) Peter Pan (racism), Bambi, Dumbo, 101 Dalmatians (we don’t do fur and that movie is horrid) or The Fox and The Hound (message that you can’t trust anyone no matter how good you are to them.)

IMHO Ratigan from The Great Mouse Detective. His song, The World's Greatest Criminal Mind. Give it a watch with the lyrics. A line in the song is he drowns widows & orphans. And then he kills a mouse that calls him a rat! idclips.com/video/8UQg4zb9dsA/video.html

The Lion King ruined my childhood, it broke my heart. Though it's one of my favourite films, even if I don't watch it.
Plus if you read up the real fairy tales to these Disney films, childhood is definitely ruined when you realise what originally happened (and there's some pretty twisted stuff going on). But eh, still enjoyable to watch these days.

I would put Scar's murder of Mufasa in the stampede ahead of Bambi. Maybe it's because I was at the right age, but it's a much, much more harrowing scene, and the look in Mufasa's eyes when he realizes that Scar has always planned to betray him sends a chill down my spine even just thinking about it. Not to mention the after scene of Simba coming up on Mufasa's body and begging for him to wake up.
    I cry.

The early Disney films such as Snow White, Bambi, Dumbo and definitely Fantasia weren't made for kids. They were made for a general audience which would be mostly adults well familiar with these stories. It was a completely different way of thinking about animated films. Pinocchio was made as a kids film, but at the time kids would have been very familiar with the story so the kids getting turned into donkeys wasn't that shocking but expected. And you have to remember that these films came out at a time that everyone walked afraid that at any moment a bomb could drop on their heads. Over time a mistaken belief has developed that animation is only for kids and you can't make an adult animated work without objectionable material.
I would have expected hephlumps and woozels from Winnie the Pooh to be in there. It was more disturbing than the pink elephants in Dumbo.

Actually, "The Black Cauldron" was cast aside because, at the time, it was a pretty substantial failure. Like, it was so expensive and bombed so horribly that it almost sent Disney into bankruptcy.
Which is why the rest of the movies discussed on this list are easily found in a myriad of secondary/remastered/rereleased formats...but that one movie is locked away within Disney's own black cauldron.

I think that the reason that Disney has mostly buried Black Cauldron (not completely though since it can be found on DVD) is because of how poorly it did in theaters. The Black Cauldron did so badly that it lost to The Care Bears Movie in its opening weekend. It was so poorly received that Disney almost shut down their animation department. It was only the success of The Great Mouse Detective that saved it

What makes "Hellfire" even more disturbing is that it isn't just a song about how Frollo is frustrated because Esmerelda gives him a forbidden boner - in it he displays all of the seven deadly sins: his pride in his self-perceived virtue, his lust for Esmerelda, his envy towards anyone who might spark her affection before him, his greed as he treats Esmerelda as an object to be gained for himself and nobody else, his wrath as he vows to destroy her if she doesn't give herself to him, his sloth as he blames others (Esmerelda and God) for his own weaknesses, and his gluttony (or selfishness, as it's often interpreted) as he vows to burn down all of Paris just to get to her.
(don't thank me, thank the Disney wiki: disney.wikia.com/wiki/Hellfire )
And Disney thought it was appropriate for a kids' movie...
