Doctor Reviews Meatless Burgers | Impossible, Beyond & More!

  • Dipublikasikan tanggal 13 Jun 2019
  • After my successful 30-day vegan challenge I decided to give you an in-depth look into this new meatless burger or vegan burger craze! I ordered five meatless burgers and a single beef one for comparison's sake. I will say these burgers are technically not vegan because I included cheese and the brioche bun but they are still vegetarian! I love cheese. Let me know if you've tried any of these!
    Burgers Included in this Review
    - Impossible Burger
    - Beyond Burger
    - Quinoa Burger
    - Black Bean Burger
    - Beef Burger
    - Sweet Potato Burger
    If you have an idea of something you want me to cover in depth, please let me know because I take your requests seriously. We will be back with more Doctor Reacts Series & Responding to Comments so please submit more names of shows/episodes & questions you'd like for me to watch. Love you all!

    I live for beef burger love, but I love a good black bean patty sometimes. Not as a burger replacement for any reason (like health or environmental/veganism), but just bc I get in the mood for it. If you can find a good one, they’re delicious! I love pizza loaded with veggie toppings, too - not for any reason other than I just like it -

    It's difficult for a Doctor to speak about nutrition, because you are not a nutritionist. So simple is that. The WHO confirmed that a vegan diet is the healthiest diet you can go with. So no, even If you eat meat one time a week you don't get healthier as on a plant based diet. Please don't say something like that.

    I'm not eating beef and pork because I got bit by a Lone Star tick and contracted Alphagal, which makes you allergic to mammalian meat. I'd love to find a high protein substitute that tastes like beef. There are around 300,000 people in the U.S. who have Alphagal. (That's short for alphagalactose 1,3. That's the molecule we have the allergic reaction to.)
    The so-called "healthy" veg burgers like black bean, quinoa, etc., are very high carb, bad for me because I'm diabetic. Protein and fat don't raise my blood sugar. Carbs do. I avoid too much salt on a regular basis because it makes me retain fluid, and I usually don't like extremely salty food anyway.

    One could argue for the beef burger that if it was homemade you could get the sodium down way lower then any of those packaged burgers. I personally never add salt when making homemade. You can also control the amount of fat by the choice of meat used.
    But I guess the same could be said for making some of the meatless burgers as well for the amount of sodium.
    But using 50% of your daily sodium intake on 1 single burger seems like a lot. And lets be real, if you going to go through the effort of making burgers at home regardless if homemade or packaged. Chances are you ain't making just 1. In one meal you just hit 100% sodium intake without factoring in things like sides and drink.
    As a person with high blood pressure and down to 36% heart function. You could say I am very aware of the amount of sodium I take in.

    India has the largest vegetarians in the world and no one is dying because lack of animal proteins in their diet. Please stop feeding people bs that protein means animals. Lentils, legumes,tofu has proteins. Vegetarians live longer and healthier. If everyone is eating the recommended dietary proteins why is the cancer rate hiking?? Stop feeding bs from your textbook.

    Impossible Burger makes me feel nauseated. I prefer eating Dr Praeger's variety of veggie burgers with rice. This is far more satisfying and enjoyable than sloppy burgers and believe me, I was a burger/chicken junkie in college. Black bean burgers for me, aren't really meant to be a replica of burgers, but an alternative for something of a tradition. Impossible and Beyond are meant to be cruelty-free (ish - Impossible, looking at you) meat replacements. Doctor Mike is correct, these are waaaay too salty and should be eaten on occasion (not daily or weekly).

    Why everyone forget about the animals that go through this? Imagine been raised to be killed like how sad you would be? Its about evniroment and health but its also about animals too, i know some people dont care about animals but me neither some animals i dont like them but its about respecting them so personally i dont like cows so much but i wouldnt kill a cow because i dont like them!

    I have been vegan for over 5 years and I agree, these burgers aren't great for your health, we all as a collective need to transition to a majority plant based diet(plant based lifestyle). But if you do, please make sure you're not harming yourself in the process. DON'T just drink smoothies and eat these burgers.. definable detrimental to your health if you eat junk all the time no matter your diet

    when someone vegan or vegetarian eats a burger it's not with our health in mind. lol. we have so many good healthy meals that when I get a burger I just want it to taste good it's not really about being healthy. I also haven't eatin meat in almost 3 years now so I have no idea what meat tastes like now it's been so long it's just kinda a guess so some veggie burgers taste just like meat to me and how I remember it.

  • Sao Pooh

    You covered the point that many reviewers ignore in that it makes little sense (other than trying to protect the environment) to choose a meat-like burger, when they aren't healthier. That is one of the main reasons I would choose them over meat. And on top of that, they cost more!

    • Sao Pooh
      Sao Pooh 4 hari yang lalu

      @Laura Wachter
      Oh yeah, and what I also wanted to tell you was that maybe this attack on beef is actually a good thing, because I was watching a report that highlighted because now that some of these beef farmers are starting to feel threatened, they have suddenly realized that there might be other methods of producing beef products that could be less harmful to the environment. Go figure, huh? Like the old saying goes, "Money talks and Bullshit walks..."

    • Sao Pooh
      Sao Pooh 4 hari yang lalu

      @Laura Wachter
      At first, I used the yogurt, because I knew it was healthier, but after the first time, I honestly fell in love with the taste. And yogurt is so versatile: sometimes I put in a few dashes of hot sauce - next time a little ketchup. But my favorite is garlic (powder or fresh) with dill and a little bit of pick juice or apple cider vinegar (adding a bit of stevia, if no pickle juice) and wow... Can't believe that no chains are offering this option to their customers, as a means of cutting calories. They are really sold on the idea that only a greasy burger tastes good. Crazy!

    • Laura Wachter
      Laura Wachter 4 hari yang lalu

      Sao Pooh that’s a really great tip! I’m not a big mayo person, but I’ll have to try greek yogurt. I also always buy ground beef that and make my own burger patties- it’s cheaper and healthier that way

    • Sao Pooh
      Sao Pooh 4 hari yang lalu

      @Laura Wachter
      To be fair, I do think there's a future for it, if they do it right and listen to the customer. And the reason I think so is because a "strict" plant based diet has proven to be good at clearing clogged arteries. However as highlighted, it must be strict, meaning low in fat and these burgers are definitely not lower in fat and sodium. In fact, they're higher. So, if they don't address this and find away to drop the price, then you're absolutely right. The novelty will wear off and people will be back to ordering their beef burgers. For instance, I've simply decided to eat organic 95% lean beef burgers that I make myself with a yogurt sauce, instead of mayo and they're great!

    • Laura Wachter
      Laura Wachter 4 hari yang lalu

      @Sao Pooh Exactly! And most of the people who were really taken by the burgers were those who had already been vegetarian/vegan for like one or two years and missed eating meat. All the meat eaters I know thought it was okay, but not worth it. One even said he was left hungry an hour later! Once the novelty wears off, I don't think there's much a future for it, especially given the price as you said.

    How can you say the meatless burgers have more saturated fat and sodium than meat burgers? They don't:

    Impossible Burger
    Saturated Fat: 8g
    Sodium: 370mg
    Original Whopper (Beef)
    Saturated fat 12 g
    ***Trans fat 1.5 g**** (meatless burgers don't have trans fat! this stuff is extremely unhealthy!!)
    Cholesterol 87 mg
    Sodium 911 mg

  • fajita
    fajita 9 hari yang lalu

    When comparing the health quality of the meatless burgers to the meat burgers, you neglected a major component: cholesterol. Impossible & Beyond meatless burgers have 0 cholesterol. A regular meat Whopper has whopping 87 mg. That's a huge difference and a major health consideration, given the health risks of high cholesterol foods.

    I never buy their marketing crap about how healthy those Vegan Burger and my doubt is cleared when you show me those charts.
    They adding so much stuff that is more dangerous than regular beef meat.
    Just go with regular classic beef meat. Imitation sometimes is far more dangerous than the original.
