@Rust rug skin I've been playing the game a bit. It's enjoyable enough, not very difficult as long as you're decent. My biggest issue is that I like collecting weapons and armor and stuff and that's not a thing at all in the game. You get all your gear right at the start and it never changes. The skill tree is neat though

I usually watch this series for the wacky/janky student project/game jam games or for stuff that's so early access that I don't count on playing it anytime soon but I am quite intrigued by Asterigos. I'm not necessarily $35 of intrigued by it but I have wish listed it on Steam and should it go on sale and drop into the $20ish range I could see myself picking it up.
It's also "playable" on Steam Deck should anyone be interested in that sort of thing.

Hey, creative director for Abigor here. I always knew in the back of my mind that there was a chance we could show up on an Iron Pineapple video but I didn't think it would actually happen. Our team worked really hard on Abigor for 8 months and put our hearts into it. Glad you had fun with it; I couldn't hope for more! Thanks for playing, made my day.

I know this is kinda old now but just wanted to say the game does have potential, but as it is it’s not a good game overall, looks like it’d be fun to waste a few minutes though. Not to be rude or anything, the people who made it definitely had fun and that makes a game a lot funner, but I’d like to see a more fleshed out game from the same people

@Phucketmcsucket I've only done one dev class myself but I think just having the assets and getting them to work properly in the game is likely what the instructors were grading on rather than getting the details polished. Recording/reviewing/editing multiple takes may have just been a time expense that wasn't affordable for the project 🥲

@CoolKid There is no lawsuit, why are you making stuff up?, The game is literally releasing in a couple of days, you would think that if Sony had concerns of there being identical mechanics they would have already taken it down?, well even though some things might look similar they're not, that's why the game is releasing with no legal issues.

Right when I saw the MC get up at 28:49 I knew Abigor was going to be an enjoyable experience. Just the fact that someone put the time into giving all of the NPCs in the classroom unique things to do makes it stand out a ton despite the lack of visual fidelity, and shows they put a lot of effort into it. Good on them :D

I’m playing Blue Fire right now and it’s a lot of fun! Very derivative (Hollow Knight, Zelda, Dark Souls) but it’s a fun metroidvania to explore. I also played Eldest Souls, which was really challenging but satisfying to beat (frustrating controls at times). And I played Curse of the Dead Gods, which I didn’t think was as fun as he did, but I’m not a big rogue like person anyway. There’s a number of games I plan on checking out still from him (Tunic, Below, Ashen, Dark Devotion, Unsighted, Ender Lilies, Death’s Gambit, Lucah)

Little Witch Nobeta: amazing blend of Resident Evil and Souls gameplay + cute and horror artstyles, it's a bit exploitative of characters and I wish levels weren't just the same 2 textures repeated over and over infinitely, but the core gameplay is an amazing mix of systems that synergize with each other and the bosses are really good. (The full release happened like a week ago btw)
TUNIC: It's got an amazing sense of mystery and discovery due to some stuff I can't even talk about without spoiling the experience. If you like ARGs or grew up with 1990s gaming instruction manuals and schoolyard rumors, this game will speak to you on a personal level.
Ender Lilies: It's got the souls sadness more than the gamplay, but the "you can leave a spirit behind and keep moving while it attacks autonomously" mechanic is pretty fun and has a lot of depth. The map is an atrocious mess that makes it HARDER to understand areas and also doubles as a little nagging reminder to backtrack to complete areas (which usually fails because of how many movement abilities you need) and overall I burned out on it so much near the end, I reached the final boss but never even fought them.
Death's Gambit: played this in early access and replayed it when the big overhaul dropped, IMO the final cut made it worse (the forced humor just ruins the somber elements, most of the new areas are featureless padding corridors, the new ending selection gimmick actively punishes you for trying to enjoy all the content in the game, and don't get me started on the stat and upgrade systems...)
Vigil: The Longest Night: I haven't actually played it yet (I got it right before Elden Ring news started happening and then got permanently distracted by FROMSoftware) so I can't tell you what I think about it yet, but it looks amazing.
Death Trash: Also haven't played it, I'm thinking I'll hold off until it leaves early access, but I love it conceptually and style-wise so I just had to support the dev right away.
Hellpoint: Amazing area design and has one of the best hubs in any soulslike, indie or not, but the gameplay is really janky with little touches like "hitboxes appear the same frame as attack tells, so you can't use the tell do see attacks coming before they hit you". If you play soulslikes for exploration, taking cool screenshots and feeling insignificant you might enjoy it, if you play for the core gameplay loop you probably won't.
It really was 7 games, huh? I didn't realize until I counted...

Man this was the first time I've seen anything about Crowsworn and it looks awesome so thanks for adding it. I don't understand why it's such a problem if it does closely resembles Hollow Knight, it's a phenomenal game. It kills me sometimes how some people think souls games are the only ones that devs can emulate, everything else has to be 100% unique. Anyway although I've watched a bunch of this series, I don't know if I've seen all so if you've already played these recommendations, I apologize. That being said you should check out Shrouded In Sanity, just make sure to learn the mechanics, I've seen a few people try it only to stop saying it's too hard because they didn't learn the block and gun parry and flashlight stun systems. Another really cool one that's kind of rouge-lite is called Bloody Spell, it's made by a Chinese developer so translations are kind of iffy but everything else like graphics and game play are top notch

I just wish they had double-checked their Latin for the name. The word 'vanitas' is a feminine noun, but the adjective 'divinus' describes a MASCULINE noun. The adjective's feminine form is 'divina', so if they wanted the title to be faithful to Latin, it would have been 'Divina Vanitas'. Sounds nitpicky, but errors like that just make me itch after having taken four years of Latin in high school.

Hat tip to you playing Wo Long : Fallen Dynasty demo! I beaten the PS5 version and have a bonus waiting. For me, troubles started at the half-point near the boss but I managed to request some back-up and finish him off with two peeps just before the lockdown time on it. Another problem to me is one must take note on leveling up; choose their elements wisely because boost one, lose two... tricky! This is where balance is key. And *yes* I agree with you completely that deflecting moves of the enemy to me felt very weak (and got me in a lot of trouble at the later half-point) and at least the 2nd attempt and onward against the major boss was me being hyper-aggressive on him and cornering him. Went well till Form-2 in which he was not staggered that easily even against 3 peeps to 1, but we did it.

I'm actually genuinely impressed by Asterigos. I'm gonna watch for the full release. To me, my one gripe would be that certain animations just seem to sound and feel a bit clunky. That can change by launch. I'm definitely gonna keep my eye out for this one.

@Jason Smith The original souls games were all made by a Japanese dev team... It sounds more like you just prefer hack and slash combat games with combo modifiers. Lots of "soulslike" games are generic sure but the original series of games that spawned the genre are by default the exact opposite of generic because they created and defined a genre of its own rather than being fully derivative of one.

    • Jason Alcatraz
      Jason Alcatraz Bulan Yang lalu

Having watched the gameplay extensively, I wanna point out some things I love about your game.
      1. the combat is excellent, especially in the way you handled the weapons. I love that all the weapons are there and you can mix and match for your own synergies. On top of that, each can be charged for unique moves AND you have skills that you can use even if you don't have the respective weapon equipped. That's a really awesome feature, I love that. The weapons really do make the combat seem fluid, diverse, and especially creative. And yet you also managed to add skill trees for each? That's just pure dedication!
      2. The boss designs are some of the best I've seen in indie souls likes; because you managed to do something a lot of developers miss with bosses- telegraphed attacks. The Souls games are all so well designed because the enemies and especially bosses (mostly) telegraph their moves while offering enough time for the players to be able to read and react. My favorite example was the Crocodile boss raising its tail up before doing a spin attack when you're behind it. It's telegraphed enough to be able to react without it being overly generous.
Would love to see you continue on this project. It's one of the best indie souls-like games I've seen (or games in general) in a while. Keep up the good work.

Crowsworn looks amazing but, I definitely feel like it's the embodiment of everyone I hate about Souls-like games. Like... why have these fun combat options if you're not gonna let me use them?

The second game uses the same animations as an mmo I've played before, ironically this game does them better by simply allowing the animations to continue to flow rather than striking a pose if you stop mid combo. Specifically the sword and shield, it was the paladin class in the game, cannot remember the name but you played as a God and amassed followers by doing missions and stuff.

Hey pineapple, I have a game recommendation for you. Its called Noita and itwas developed by the same studio that did Baba Is You. It isn't a souls like at all, but environmental storytelling is definitely a factor. It's a really well made rogue like where every pixel is simulated, meaning theoretically everything you see on screen can kill you. I haven't gotten to the hook yet, though. You play as a wizard with a wand, simple enough right? Nope. You can interchange and combine your spells to make new combos to obliterate your enemies with, and every run you will probably find a new spell to use. It might seem expensive on the steam page but as someone who has well over 100 hours already, it is worth every penny. It also has workshop support so players can upload their ridiculous or awesome mods. The environments and enemies have a psychedelic Lovecraftian vibe, and their pixel art reinforces this vibe in a simplistic but artful manner. This game is incredibly unforgiving, but once you get the hang of the wand crafting and using the fully simulated environment, the punishment is worth it. I think you would like the vibe of it, so maybe check it out. It will make you better at roguelikes. Ps. The music is baller lol

Such a good take on nioh and wo long. Nioh 2 WAS amazing and i felt a lot of people were a bit intimidated to learn ki pulses and other mechanics that made it unique and very very satisfying. Pretty much what was said "fantastic if you can deal with the learning curve" and "don't play it like dark souls".
In fact it's hilarious how many people get fucked by wearing light armor and ignoring blocks.
Also, i'll add for whoever reads it and consider trying nioh: You can 100% ignore the loot system and just use whatever has a higher damage/defense value. I know, i did it. It's really not a problem.
