Hey have you ever looked up histology slides? I work in a hospital laboratory and Histology is the most fascinating process i have ever seen. I know you are a engineer and must of studied physicis. Histology is a beautiful mix of Biology and Chemistry that you will defiantly find interesting and could make a video on. There are Histo-Pathology laboratories in every hostpital as it is essential in many diagnosis and you could approach one in Alabama.

It's ironic because they're the branch of the military that do the most every day to help the average citizen. There is no 'peacetime' for them. They are on alert 24/7 365 days a year.

That last clip is why you ALWAYS wear a life jacket on a small craft. Things happen way faster than you think, and you do not want to be making decisions in an emergency.

Not wearing a life jacket on a boat is like not wearing a seatbelt in a car. You won’t have time to put it on before the accident. I’m amazed at how many of my kids’ friends don’t put on their belt until I just sit there and refuse to move the car until they do.

100%. We were lucky that this wasn’t a “hard lesson”. Hopefully people learn from our stupid mistake.
To all the keyboard warriors in the peanut gallery saying that the boat was over capacity, water was too rough and there was nothing wrong with the boat - You’re wrong on all counts. The water was very calm when this happened. The boat was not over capacity IAW the capacity plate and the USCG formula for safe max capacity (that boat was safe up to 10-11 pax depending on weight). And the boat was in fact the cause - The bilge pump wiring broke while on the water and it was undetectable that the hull was filling with water until we saw some water on the deck that clued us in that something wasn’t right (about 30 seconds later we were treading water). The only (and biggest) preventable mistake/lapse in judgement was that nobody was wearing life vests. As the husband of the “pregnant woman” and father to our baby boy, I am forever grateful for the Captain that saved us. I was also pretty pumped when the USCG brought back my Hey Dudes 😂

    • B G
      B G Bulan Yang lalu +1

@Alexander Kupke It is the invasive 4th amendment breaking "safety" checks. The main purpose of the Coast Guard, Police, ... might be to proved emergency safety services, but when they have lots of down time and spend it being busy body hall monitors issuing citations that can cost you hundreds to thousands of dollars, it hurts the public relations.

    • Alexander Kupke
Alexander Kupke Bulan Yang lalu +4

@Michael Frey I never get the lack of appreciation or even respect for any service that is installed for the sole purpose of public safety. I see it like an airbag in my car. I never want to see that thing up close, but in some unexpected and highly unwanted case, it might be the thing I am grateful for when it was there. So thinking about it, I am glad it is there when I need it.
And same with helping others in emergency situations, like that boater on the Adelaide (not sure if I got the name right) did. Not only while boating, but on the road in traffic or anywhere. I will go out and help someone, who for example got into an accident or is sufffering from a helath issue, just because I hope if I happen to need help, someone will do the same.

@Vigilant Cosmic Penguin sometimes a good natured joke is a much better lesson then a harsh talk. Getting the shoes and hat back is a good one - it shows that the cost guard, real people, are out there that do not mind saving you, but also: that could all that there could have been to save and they are lucky, that they are just a small note in the annual report, not a "could not be saved".

@Chad Neu in general I'd agree, but it also depends on the rate you choose. If you go CS, you can make chief in like 6 or 7 years. Choose a critical rate and you'll fly, we're hurting for numbers like any other branch.
And while it is a decent chance that you could be on a cutter for a couple years, it's not guaranteed at the moment. About half my graduating class got stations, it all comes down to the needs of the CG and we need quite a few in stations for some reason

    • Chad Neu
Chad Neu 2 bulan yang lalu +1

just FYI if you care about money then the coast guard is the last branch to join. it's very difficult to rank up in the coast guard and takes quite a long time. you'll more than likely spend your first year or two on a cutter which sucks and the pay is low. it's a rad job though.

@SmarterEveryDay Looking at the rough ride a smart move. Even if you can swim, it looks like it easily might happen that you involuntarily disembark while knocking your head on the way out. People for such instances never seem to realize that there might be instances where you get off a watercraft, due to an accident or a health issue, which will leave you possibly unable to swim.

Awesome to see you down here, Destin! Fun fact: I used to work on the beach in Orange Beach in high school. One day I heard a SUPER loud boom. I thought Eglin was dropping mini nukes or something! You taught me that pilots can go supersonic out near Orange Beach (based on the sectional chart), and that must have been what I heard. They might have been a bit too close to shore, lol. Who knows.
Also, I went to Blue Angels Elementary and had to be moved from the window because I would watch them practice and wasn't paying enough attention. Irony!

Love the video. Destin is a 2nd home to us and to see into the operation of the US Coast Guard station there was amazing! Thank you for that! Passed by that station so many times not realizing it was that active with that many Coastal Guatdsmen located there! Amazed they let you have that much access! Awesome!

I really do appreciate these videos. Especially the ones that show the men and women that protect us civilians every day.
Police. Fire. Hospital medical staff. Army. Navy. Air force. Marines. Coast guard. Firefighters. Etc.
A lot of good people in this world.

So cool to watch this. I lived in Destin for 5 years and saw all kinds of craziness out on the water. The Coast Guard and local law enforcement has their hands full with all the inexperienced and inebriated boaters out there.

    Boating CAN be painful!
I went waterskiing with my dentist (Yup!) who had a lovely smallish ski-boat but with a very impressive blueprinted engine. We had a good time and then on they way back he offered to demonstrate the engine's capabilities... And he went wide open throttle. And it was VERY impressive indeed!!
    Until I parted my knees...
Not to put too fine a point on it, as we landed, after cresting one small wave, the sudden upwards jolt sent my privates slamming down into the seat cushion with considerable force - not unlike receiving an upwards slap from an open hand! This would only have caused mild stinging if done to the face - but it was another matter entirely when testicles were involved!!
A mistake I will NEVER make again!!!

Hey Destin, I just want to say I'm really enjoying these deep dive series you've been doing, please keep it up. Single episode topics are fine and all but when you find a subject like the Coasties and the Subs that have a ton of stuff we don''t hear about, it really is worth it to dig deep like you've been doing. Thanks my dude!

Destin...love your channel and the series. When something happens to your car, you pull over and get out to deal with it. When something happens to your boat, well... you can't pull over...or get out (by choice). Many boaters don't have the respect for the hazards of the water (which this video shows can happen FAST). Fellow boaters and the Coast Guard become instant saviors when things go bad on the water. Those that serve in the Coast Guard quietly protect all of us that are privileged to be able to enjoy the water for our occupation or recreation. Thank you Coast Guard.

Destin, with over 10M subs, you are clearly taken care of by IDclips (the system, not the company) ... I just want to tell you from my heart, with hand on the Bible, you make such a hugely positive impact on the world we all share while we are here.
You are obviously entertaining, but the knowledge and fascination you bring to everyone who watched your videos is tremendously important (and interesting).
From my heart, I thank you for what you are doing for the betterment of humanity - I know that sounds over the top, but truly, you DO make a positive impact on everyone who views your channel.
