I'm confused. God evidently decided that these people needed a volcano, and now needs us to tell him that they need help. Suppose it wasn't "the hand of god", why would he need us to tell him that even in that case the people need help? If you want to help, donate to relief organizations.

@dawn d it ain't a bomb. The explosion was roughly around 10 megaton, which is a large nuclear bomb. There is no radioactive fallout so it wasn't a nuke. Also there is no way that anyone has that amount of conventional explosives anywhere.

@Justme Volcanic eruptions are a natural form of explosion. The 'ripple effects' were a shock wave, and the boom was a sonic boom. These things occur when anything explodes. It's not a bomb exclusive thing.
There were lots of billows of smoke, the volcano had been letting out small bursts for a while now. They didn't expect it to do anything big, though. Small bursts are normal for volcanoes and mostly harmless.
Lava is hard to see at all from afar. Unless you're almost directly at the volcano, you will never see the lava spurting from it since it's very heavy and doesn't go far.
What residents witnessed went like this.
Volcano had been being a little active lately, not really anything to worry about (or so they thought.)
One day they went outside and saw tons of ash in the sky. They then looked in awe and maybe fear, and a little bit later, a large BOOM sounded throughout the island. As the boom hit, the wind and water rippled, clearly showing this was more than just a boom, but a shockwave, as you watch the shockwave excite the waves and the leaves.
This is all really standard for volcanoes. Remember, shockwaves aren't caused by bombs, they're caused by explosions. The eruption looked like a bomb because it behaved like one. Anything that explodes will look more or less the same as a bomb.

Thankfully, not much. Scientists are doing calculations and so far the worst estimate is 0.5% cooling. And that's just a possible estimate. It could be even less, if at all.

@snake plissken Except the pacific Ring has smaller constant active eruptions. We won’t see another Krakatoa or Tambora for thousands of years. Hunga Tunga caused damage to the local island, but it’s overall impact isn’t expected to be severe. Vesuvius is of great concern not only because of the population nearby but because it’s long overdue for an eruption and Vesuvius has some of the most violent in European history. You would see a severe economic impact, reduction of air travel over the continent and drop in global temperature for the year

In Tonga underwater magma chamber underneath a remote island interacted with sea and caused this massive explosion triggering a worldwide tsunami. Vesuvius eruption may only cause a local pyroplasctic flow. Depending upon which side of the mountain collapses, it may cause harm to Napoli or not. Honestly I am very anxious of Pacific volcanoes since they are very active and have higher yield. When Krakatoa erupted it caused years of famine because plumes hanged out in the atmospehere for a long time concealing sunlight thus negatively effecting crops. Yellowstone on the other hand is a Holywood myth, last eruption was 640k years ago, your home cooker has a higher risk than that, everyone must bet their money elsewhere.

Please elaborate why YOU assume that THEY feel abandoned by us around the world. The world/countries may be messed currently but they will never be abandoned by good citizens of the world. I have been on the ground in such disasters during my career. It's truly amazing to see the end result on the ground from the good people around the world. Be it from cake sales, people on the street or outside supermarkets holding out buckets raising money or school children coming up with ideas to raise funds. Not to mention incredible voluntary trained organisations on the ground. I apologise for such a long winded reply but A, Tongans are such wonderful positive people I have had the pleasure to meet. B, for all the hatred and division we are witnessing it is events like this that unite us all and bring out the good in people. Just have faith in good people around the world. Time will tell... 👍

Best estimate I've seen so far is a likely mid to high 4.

@Yumi Jaymesme its probably weaker than st. Helens, i saw that early reports say it was the strongest since pinutubo in 1991 and theres been 1 VEI 5 since pinutubo implying this is probably VEI 5. However the sulfer dioxide released was only half of st helens

I think this one did more damage than St. Helens. My goodness this volcano basically destroyed itself. The uninhabited island the volcano sit on is gone.

Luckily, although it's called an 'underwater' volcano, a large portion of it is actually above the water. It's really only the center of the volcano that's submerged, but you can't get in there via boat.

You cant until the ash is out of the air. The ash will solidify inside your vehicle if you get to close. This is survivable for them if they had time to prepare.

Satellite phones are working, but rare in Tonga. The country didn't get ham radio until it was brought by visitors in the late 1970s, and there are still few licensed hams or stations there. Government agencies and the general population keep thinking ham radio is obsolete tech, until something like this happens.
