Dr. Bill's ... Weight Loss Plan

  • The American Medical Association recently declared obesity to be a "US Disease." Dr. Harris suggests it should be called, instead, the "USDA-sease" since the US government, by giving $14 billion of annual price supports to the animal and junk food industries and IRS tax deductibility for their advertising expenses, is responsible for most of it.

In this presentation, Dr. Harris explains how to avoid this newly proclaimed "disease" with two simple basic rules and a few not-so-simple ones. He discusses the primate diet as it evolved over the past 60 million years and concludes that humans are adaptive omnivores but still have the vegan genes of their ape ancestors from ~ 20 million years ago, since humans can still thrive on a vegan regimen.

He suggests that the sudden upsurge in brain/bodyweight ratio 2 million years ago was more likely due to the conquest of fire and subsequent use of tubers than an increase in omega-3 FA intake, since there's little DHA in the terrestrial "paleo diet" and we never went through a marine phase.

For weight loss to occur the stomach should be filled and nutrient needs met BEFORE Calorie requirements are.

I don't like too much salt in my diet, so I hardly use any, but when I do use it, I have been using one called REAL SALT, it has many other minerals in it and is pink and grey in color I wonder what he things of it.

If people ate the right diet they wouldn't need to fast. High carbs, low fat vegan. I have eaten all I want for 3 years and my weight is very stable. After a fast the body naturally stores more fat because it needs to replenish it's stores for the next famine, therefore fasting actually promotes weight gain afterwards and is counter-productive to being healthy and slim IMO.

I've been reading about good nutrition for almost 45 years, and Dr. Harris' presentation here (humor included) is the most lucid & most complete I've ever seen/read. Many thanks!

Soy is consumed a lot in asia so I don't fear phyto estrogens. Even wheat gluten is quite common in asia. I am more afraid of pollution in the oceans and pollution in seafood. Eating wild seafood is like eating from the garbage dump. Farmed seafood is even worse than wild seafood. For ALA omega 3, it is possible to get some from greens like purslane (verdolaga, ma chi xian).

Some vegan doctors use fasting to treat food addiction. There are examples of high fat diets that don't seem to be too harmful like the traditional inuit diet with high fat animal products, some africa traditional diets that used high fat nuts as a staple or islanders who ate a lot of coconuts. I don't know if there is a longevity difference between high starch vegan and high fat vegan, altho in traditional diets, there are more examples of high starch diets.

Dr Bill, I know you mention that muscle mass is lost in fasting but isn't the heart muscle damaged during fasting? Also is there an absolute advantage to fasting as even in your case, it doesn't seem to reduce weight, only maintain it. Great video as always ;) thank you !

At 48:00 in this talk I off-handedly state that Ancel Keys cherry-picked his data for his Seven Countries study. I ask that you ignore that and Google instead on “plant positive-4 ancel keys” for a rebuttal.

Not using blender bec prefer to eat slowly. Many traditional diets did grind or powder some items but these were very active people. I never juice since I never throw away fiber. Since water is important, dehydrating is probably a waste of time unless it is needed to preserve the food and you rehydrate the food when eating. Best argument for vegan diet seems to be the fear of global warming and the fear of extinction. Hopefully, Hawaii 2020 does not look like my old favorite cartoon Sealab 2020.

McDougall diet is based on traditional diets so it is mostly starch, vegetables and a little bit of fruits. The 1949 okinawa diet had almost no nuts and no seeds and very little fruit. The sweet potato staple was weak on b2, b12, calcium and zinc. One advantage of grains is zinc which is found less in greens. Easier to meet calorie requirements on starch to avoid eating wild greens the whole day like sheep. Most traditional diets have some cooked food so an all raw diet is more experimental.

Not tried fasting & enjoy eating continuously. I pace if I am waiting & I use the stairs to the 9th floor everyday. In our floor, there is one guy who works standing. I walk to the office pantry a lot & I exercise after every meal. I computed my calorie requirement of about 1,800 on a web site & protein needed is about 42 grams (53 kg x 0.8 grams). I shoot for about 1,600 calories per day and 10% fat. We now have the technology to catch lots of insects so maybe all insect diet is possible also.

Thank you kindly, dear Doctor! It's sometimes difficult to sort things out from those who say "no this, no that" (e.g., no salt in any form, or garlic is poison, etc.). I don't eat added salt often--except I like it on melons--but very few little granules, so I'm easily under the 300 mg/day. Celery/juice/flakes or pickled veggies seems to satisfy my salt tooth,
I'll be interested to learn of your evaluation of black lava salt, and always look forward to your presentations :) xoxo

Garlic and herbs are certainly acceptable flavorings. The Lava Salt looks enticing and I will try it, however it's still Na+Cl- diluted in other minerals. The actual requirement for salt is only about 300 mg/day and the medical literature is rife with warnings about its overuse including hypertension and peripheral edema.

A search on “brains” brought up 11 quadruped brains with 6 no DHA data and a median of .823 gm DHA/100 gm for the 5 listed.

I would be grateful for the paleo URL that lists the alleged DHA content of “wild” muscle meats.

Thank you for the comment on paleo DHA. At ndb dot nal dot usda dot gov I performed a search on “grass-fed” and got 17 quadrupeds (bison and beef) with 4 listing no DHA and the rest listing no DHA data. There were 7 “game meats” (deer, antelope, bear, caribou, elk, horse, muskrat) with 2 listing no DHA and the other 5 listing no DHA data.

....even wild grass fed animals are lower in omega-3 than fish, and much lower than flax seeds, and walnuts which are the top source to get omega-3.
