I live in a very rural, non-culturally diverse, extremely conservative Christian area, and watching your video is really reminding me of my adventures going to Kinokuniya back at home and being able to find fellow anime fans anywhere. This is making me want to start a go fund me to just create an anime shop right in the middle of the small country town I live in XD oh how I miss this experience!

@Michelle Redacted I’m so sorry to hear that! That sounds awful. If it helps to know, while where I grew up, women and diverse ethnicities were treated a lot better than that, there were still other problems, for example, I left where I lived before because while our politicians wanted to see them all woke and stuff by banning plastic bags, there’s still extremely reluctant to do anything about the evidence greenhouse gases problem and air pollution. Basically, airbrush and whereI was raised was starting to get so bad in my early adulthood, I had to leave. It was affecting my ability to enjoy certain foods, which I didn’t realize they would have that impact until I visited a farm out in the middle of nowhere, was absolutely crisp and clean air, yet there was only junkie food to eat, yet I did not experience the tumultuous stomach discomfort that usually ensued when I eat the foods that I eat at that farm. There wasn’t much to eat, ironically, it was mostly store-bought stuff unfortunately, but I still manage to not be doubled over in pain. Really says a lot the fact that I’m able to eat like literally everyone else with barely any digestive distress at all whatsoever when I’m actually in clean air. I’m sure Mexico has plenty of parts of it that are filthy in the air, but also if it helps at all with your bitterness, which is totally understandable, it helps you feel better, we’ve had pretty much the exact same divisiveness but just in a different form. People are hating each other for their political stances, they see it as a representative of your morality. It’s really awful.

@Michelle Redacted I think I get what yur saying, I've been there for work and to pass thru, and the vibe was different from each time, like they wanted me the hell outta there.
Also, just be glad you ain't Tennessee, had the N-word(hard R), Sand N-word, and Mexicans called several colorful things, by white people who saw my white ass, and thought, "yeah, this is acceptable cause he's also white," it's weird how they feel comfortable being so blatantly racist. Keep in mind, this was a gas station owner that was saying this stuff with a customer. Also in I believe in either North Carolina or West Virginia, it was known that if you were black and out after dark in this small town, be fucking afraid.
Then you get back to Nor Cal and think, "okay, maybe it's not THAT bad, but still not okay,"

    • Michelle Redacted

Living in New Mexico is exactly like this. Sad to say, as beautiful as it is, the people are super ray -ist. If you're coming to visit from elsewhere, they'll give you the 5 Star tourist treatment, you'll be singing praises for this state going back home. But if you're planning to live here, thats a whole other animal. If you're not Mexican American or don't have roots from Mexico, if you're clearly any kind of Asian or Black, if you like culture exchange or speaking your native language, you're in for extreme loneliness and people either ignoring you or making -ist remarks. Sometimes very openly. The state is very traditional. So expect sx -ist remarks and beliefs as well.
There's been backlash toward restaurants opening for Vietnamese and Middle Eastern cuisine, some very open nasty remarks about Muslim refugees, and long standing tensions against Native American people. It just makes me so sad. I don't want to hate my state, but when I see other states with healthy culturally diversity and better treatment of women, I get bitter.

I get it, the only place to get games or anything card game related was to drive to town. I'd have killed for a spot to weeb out, but sadly anything not strictly orthodox was kinda frowned upon. It scuks knowing there are more churches than anything in town.

@Launa Seilings Oh I’m not actually Christian, I just live in a very Bible Belt area lol. As I mentioned, I initially grew up in a completely different area that was very diverse, which meant I had relatively easy access to places like Kim Kunia and ethnic grocery stores. I only in my adult life I’ve been living in the Bible belt, only by chance. I like the nature of the clean air :-)

Depending on the event I think we have to think a lot about how much time and effort goes into how these cafes do their events, especially if it's a cafe that's kind of new or a pop-up. Last weekend I went to the Undertale event close to my hometown and it was okay and I was a little upset that I waited so long to only get drinks. But one of the employees told me that they had a local small business baker working on all these patries, they only had a few weeks to get ready for the event, and they were trying to make sure most people could at least get drinks if anything. I felt bad for being upset because a small business can only handle so much especially if they only have so much time and also use other small businesses to support their events that are overwhelming. So I think we should think a little more on the scores because most times smaller cafes/pop-ups are trying their best to accommodate the people that show up.

I've hit up Capcom Bar when it existed, Artnia (Square Enix), a Rilakkuma cafe, a Moomin Cafe, a Sonic themed cafe, I think in the same space where the Arina Tanimura cafe was at Skytree, which I would have loved to go to as a huge Full Moon wo Sagashite fan, and definitely a Pokemon cafe back when they were celebrating whatever movie came out that year. I've also hit all the Ghibli stuff, and those I always highly recommend to people. Really cool stuff shown here! I loved the last one, although I have to admit I always thought cafes/diners were typically pricey if you do a meal, a few drinks, and a dessert. prices for meals typically go from 16-22 here, plus a 2-5 dollar drink, 3-6 dollar desert, and a 20% tip (you can tip however much you like, I just do either 3$ or 20% whichever is higher), meaning the price usually ranges from $26.2-$39.6, and the rest of the money paid is practically an entrance fee into a brand's cafe, I was expecting the prices to be in the 50s while watching, and it was pleasant to know that only a few almost met those high expecations

Me and my shounen brethren...I was super jealous over the sailor moon one. When I was little Sailor Moo was airing in the states and I was probably about five at the time. I remember being super embarrassed about like it and would frantically turn to a different channel when someone would walk in, but now I openly admit to really liking shoujo animes with fruits basket being a recent favorite. (Kyo is best). With a all time favorite of Kamisama Hajimemashita, (Kamisama Kiss).

Thank you so much for making this video, this was such a fun time to watch! All of these cafes looked so interesting, but if I had to pick one I wish I could've gone to, it would 100% be the Sailor Moon themed one~ That said, would you please ever consider making a 2nd part to this (provided you have the money of course)? It doesn't even need to have a wide selection of different genres or food, I just want to see more themed cafes and hear your interesting commentary on them!

@werr kowalski It's supposed to be common sense. Covid is passed just like any other cold or flu, so not sharing food should be a no-brainer.

I've actually been to the pom pom purin cafe, since I was probably about 8, I was extremely impressed by the cute decorations, and not focused on the food- Though this was a while ago (meaning four years ago) I still remember this place as my favorite place in Harajuku. I used to go to Japan every year to visit my grandparents, but due to the pandemic I haven't been able to visit them in a while. So I really enjoyed this video since I saw something that I haven't been to in so long, and it felt quite nostalgic. As an extra note I think have a vintage shop near that area (I have a navy colored crop top that I now have as a hand me down from my sister). Also please excuse my terrible grammar/typos.

Since living in japan, go to themed cafe in japan is one of the privileges I got. But like what she said in the video, unless you are obsessed and passionate with the IP they are doing, most of times you would go home disappointed with the overpriced food/merch. The whole process surround the gatcha culture that Japanese is obsessed with, sometimes you need to enter a gatcha to win the chance of visiting the cafe (eg. Animate cafe in Ikebukuro), and the randomised coaster or other goods comes along with the food.
But god when you go to the one you really loved, it’s a whole different experience✨ You forgot about the tasteless food but just in this constant awe of the decorations and plating they do. (Takes tons of photos and never look again maybe XD

Oh! And for those maybe curious or wondering what the Sailor Moon text on the drink says, it’s Usagi’s catchphrase she says in Japanese. 月にかわっておしおきよ! (tsuki ni kawatte oshiokiyo!) In English, it’s translated as “In the name of the moon, I will punish you!” 🌙✨

All of these cute anime cafes are fun and all, but one cafe I'd love to go to would be the Kaiju Sakaba in Shimbashi. Themed after the Ultraman series, it's one of those places that the boys would have a blast at, and possibly the girls too! It's just one of those places that embraces the cheesiness of the whole Kaiju culture. That includes the stained glass murals of the monsters!

As you could tell from the username, going to the Kirby cafe is one of those bucket list items for me, but that reservation battle royale pretty much makes it impossible for anyone just visiting to get in. Winner winner, chicken dinner indeed.
Also, looking at those prices, they don't seem any higher for the number of things you get compared to any theme restaurant in America, like Rainforest cafe or Medieval Times. Portions might be a bit bigger, but that's US gonna US. Presentation is definitely a step up from here, but then any effort is more than none lol.

Nice list, till now I only got the Pokemon Cafe (food meh, but on some menus you could keep the plate and the glass, also they had exclusive merch), and the Eorzea Cafe (Final Fanatasy cafe with great food and a lottery in the beginning where you can win a dessert big enough for a group of four). One other thing on my list is the other pokemon cafe, pikachu sweets, but I can see why you didn't go there. Overall it's in many cases the best to not have high expectations for the food, in many cafes the food is ok, while the japanese restaurant next to it is only 1/3 as expensive and has way better food.

The best way to make a themed cafe is by making good food that might look like the food from the theme or you could make it good food named after something or someone in the theme my favorite version was the hatter cafe in mentone Alabama it’s not the food that’s themed it’s the atmosphere with good food just my rambling and opinion. I think there can be good food that’s themed but it doesn’t always have to be that way just how I like it.
