Wind and climate change | DW Documentary

  • Shifting wind patterns are making extreme weather events more likely. This is because the wind, which distributes areas of high and low pressure along the latitude lines of the Earth, is also being influenced by climate change.
The wind is the motor for our weather. It brings us both sunshine and rain. And during the winter months, it regularly blows itself up into heavy storms. But throughout the globe, climate change is causing shifts in existing wind systems - with devastating consequences. Atlantic hurricanes, which build up over the tropics and often lay waste to swathes of land on the eastern coast of the US, are becoming more intense and bringing heavier rainfall.
Scientists are looking for clues as to the precise causes for the warming in the Arctic, where temperatures are climbing more rapidly than anywhere else in the world. In the northern hemisphere, rising temperatures result in wind systems ‘twisting’ at 10-kilometer altitudes. The Arctic jet stream drives high- and low-pressure areas around the globe. It travels around the planet from west to east at speeds of up to 500 kilometers an hour. But in recent years, meteorologists have noticed more frequent weaker phases in the jet stream - with fatal consequences for Europe. Droughts like the one experienced in 2018 and flood catastrophes like that of 2021 are both likely to recur.
Researchers on the island of Spitsbergen have already made an alarming discovery. Climate change is altering the wind, and the altered wind is accelerating climate change - a dangerous vicious cycle.

To watch that farmer make such wise and deliberate choices to adapt his field to the present climate is wonderful. It would be grand if his ideas could be shared throughout all farming communities. Then others could use what would be applicable in their scenario. Hopefully, this will be done. As for tree planting, there can never be enough of that. May many volunteer to help. Thank you.

Imagine a how a farmer would do planting corn seed in the 2 mile thick glaciers that covered his land only scant 15,000 years ago.
Yes farmers know a lot about paying attention to climate: i.e. grow cranberries in Wisconsin and oranges in Florida. As true today as it was when Ponce de Leon first set foot in Florida the early 1500s and Jean Nicolet set foot in Wisconsin in the early 1600s

He planted a 7 year old tree with a root mass of a 4 month old tree that needed a stake to help it not fall over in the wind.
Also the people planting in the forest where planting dead sticks like 10% of those will live with water given to them if none then 1% or 0% will live.
Fun fact you stake a tree that doesn't need it you make them very week to winds and much easier to fall over and easier to brake.

I live in the US in Iowa. There are no farmers in Iowa, instead the land is owned by big corporations. And I suspect most of the farmland in the US is owned by corporations and not by farmers. Corporations do not care about such things. They care about profit only. They spray chemicals that Europe has banned. They also do not care about the topsoil being blown away every winter. They have large lobbyist in our Government to make sure that no bill will get passed that will hurt their profits. It is a sad sad state of affairs, and unless our Government gets rid of lobbyist, many things will not be right here in the US.

I've found a direct correlation between climate change and flatulence. 50 Years ago when the climate was friendlier to me, I hardly ever passed wind but now at age 78 I blow the wind nearly hourly, almost like a ship's bell. I need a research grant to complete my studies on this scientific discovery. Does anyone know who has their grip on the money bag and what I need to do to loosen it?

Thank You DW for your well researched documentaries which hopefully will open the eyes of all the citizens of the world. Am from the Philippines where we are visited by 20++ typhoons every year as we border the Pacific Ocean. Climate change is not hypothetical for us but a tragic reality. We are experiencing rapid intensification of storms. Last December 2021, typhoon “Odette” rapidly intensified from a Tropical Storm to Category 4 in less than 12 hours. We were caught unprepared. We struggled with loss of power, water and communication supply for months after the aftermath of the storm. Farmers were not able to prepare and lost all their crops. Rapid intensification of storms is becoming more common now. I hope our country invests in better weather prediction tech so we can anticipate and better prepare for the effects of rapid storm intensification.

      @Barbara Hill let the people
with the right tools, clean the deadwood, and volatile dry accumulated wood out, no more large, out of control fires. Since california is the nation’s leader in destructive pollution, CO/2, heavy hydrocarbon soot. You want more control of CO/2? Divert some water from the Mississippi to more farmers/forests of the west, along with filling some reservoirs. If you can pipe oil down from alaska, you can move the second largest freshwater conveyor, to supply water to PLANT GROWING. ( the MOST efficient carbon sequestration). Instead, you try to force socialism/communism? More tyrranical government is the cure? Better get a clue. Become a better gardener.

Thank you for sharing! I am so sorry for these storms happening in your country. In the U.S., storms & hurricanes are becoming more frequent and intense in the south and east states, and droughts and forest fires have been greatly increasing in volume in the western states. Many of the fires are taking on uncharacteristic intensity and becoming very dangerous for firefighters. Many of these heroes have already been killed in action. 😢

The 1932 Cuba hurricane, known also as the Hurricane of Santa Cruz del Sur,or the 1932 Camagüey hurricane, was the deadliest and one of the most intense tropical cyclones on record to have made landfall in Cuba. It is the only Category 5 Atlantic hurricane ever recorded in November. 25 ft high storm surge, killed 3000 people.

One of the best documentaries produced to dad which articulates the exact observations of climate change affecting our day to day lives. In particular the slower moving & meandering jet stream in the northern hemisphere. What’s missing here is the direct affect to this jet stream deviation which has happened only in recent times potentially by heavy polluters, namely China, South Asia, Central Asia & India all of which are burning coal in record numbers & all of which have bought automobiles & material goods in big numbers only in the past 25-50 years. While the west has done the same the population numbers of those other regions is huge so the adoption rate is huge & the huge pollution rate follows. If you look at a CO2 map of the world you clearly see this.

Climate change is not man made. Aztec priest were sophisticated astronomers and could predict solar eclipses. They used this knowledge to con the people in believing they, the priest, had the power to black out the sun at will. This gave extreme power to the priest. This con was duplicated all across the world. So, just as the Aztec priest used the eclipse to con the people, the power-hungry fortune seekers of today are using climate change to con the people. Yes, climate change is going to happen, as it has time and time again, and there is nothing we can do to prevent it. And when all the people's efforts are exhausted, and climate change continues, they will tell us that we just acted too late. Great video on how smart people are preparing to work on coping with the changes, and not wasting their time in trying to stop a non-stoppable event.

We need to end dirty crude oil pipelines, and pipelines for crude as much as possible. We need to build massive pipelines from rivers that flow into the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian and numerous other rivers in South America and the European and Asian Continents to take fresh water from where it is an excess to where it is needed. I believe with the proper leadership and brain power dedicated to moving massive amounts of fresh water from the Columbia River just before being dumped into the Pacific to the Colorado watershed and other locations is absolutely essential and is environmentally friendly. We need to wake up to environmental enhancement priorities.

@Matthew Smith The difference in solar output (TSI) between a solar minimum and a solar maximum is, at most, approx. 0.26 watts per square meter. Out of a total average of 1362 watts per square meter. It also changes over a decade or more, sometimes hundreds of years, so is largely accommodated by the biosphere.
And, obviously, scientists are NOT disregarding thermodynamics, it's just that you don't understand thermodynamics.

It's not farts, but belches, which produce most of the methane (and some CO2) emitted by ruminants of all sorts.
Mars is not a frozen or blazing hot rock like our moon because it has a very thin atmosphere of CO2. Greenhouse works there just like it works here. The Coriolis force works on Jupiter just like it works here, giving you spiral storms.

I respect DW and appreciate them covering climate change but I have to criticize the cautious nature of changes to the jet stream. I don't think that was your intention. The production could have used a more comprehensive 'connecting the dots' at the end.
Also, you could have been a little more upfront about just scraping the surface of change. There are many tipping points that are already occurring and with rapidity. Your brief stop in the tundra/permafrost did not touch on the prodigious amount of lakes forming and, I recently saw in the news, now disappearing (i.e. transferring heat into the permafrost). There is a lot changing and the impacts are just getting revved up. So anything you report on is greatly appreciated and you will have a growing audience.
With that in mind, you might consider different series for different folk. For example, an introduction (like this video), to something more in-depth like the Doomsday Glacier in the Antarctic. In that video you don't have to worry about talking to the, how should I say, uninformed. They can go look at the basics in another video. There is also the whole world and government response (or lack thereof) that gets little to no reporting.
All that said, thanks again for your efforts.

    • Wayne Patterson
      Wayne Patterson Bulan Yang lalu

@night of the world --- and what motive is there behind such a lie? Is moving toward cleaner ecosystems and more diverse and flexible energy systems not good?
Wayne Patterson --- A lie is a lie regardless of any motives for good or evil. It is a simple fact that the Climate Change Alarmists are PRETENDING to know the Earth's temperature to an accuracy measured in tenths of a degree C/F for each year going back to the years of 1880 or earlier in some datasets, and it is scientifically impossible for them to possess the required empirical observations to support such PRETENDED knowledge. The instrumentation and the observational records never achieved anywhere near such accuracy for the locations and time periods necessary to know the earth's supposed mean temperature/s. Even the concept of a mean planetary temperature for the Earth is itself a form of pseudoscience masquerading as science. There are an endless number of reasons why the claims to know the Earth's temperatures with such fraction of a degree or even a whole degree of accuracy is simply laughable in the extreme. You're being had by the Alarmist Climate Change jokesters. Nye the Science Guy is just another huckster who has found a way to lie his way to fame and fortune along with all of the other Alarmists who are building their careers on this pile of odorous pseudoscience and fraud. Please do not take my word for it, even though you could be well advised to rely upon my professional experience. Look into how the Climate Change Alarmists are PRETENDING to know the true data despite failing to even remotely satisfy the basic requirements for empirical and accurate observations of the phenomena.
Also note how the fraudulent Climate Change Alarmism actually "Is moving toward" dirtier "ecosystems and" less "diverse and flexible energy systems." The Lithium mining is an ecological and a humanitarian disaster. The windmill farms use more fossil fuels than they conserve, and they too are an ecosystem nightmare and an avian destroyer. Alarmists' demands to sequester Carbon dioxide out of the Atmosphere hastens the day when the Earth's levels of atmospheric Carbon dioxide fall below 180ppm. When that happens the process of photosynthesis in the Plant Kingdom shuts down, the Plant Kingdom becomes extinct, and the Animal Kingdom starves into extinction as well. To make matters worse the lunatic Climate Change Alarmists seek to pollute the oceans with iron, block the Sun to lower the Earth's Solar energy gain, wreck the world's technologies and economies required for life support, and pollute the environment with Rare Earths and Rare Earth mining which is incapable of supplanting base energy energy production by fossil fuels and nuclear fuels. The whole affair is suicidal LUNACY!

When Nye says, "It's the rate, Mr. Carlson, it's the rate that is such a concern.”, he is lying. The atmospheric concentrations of Carbon dioxide were measured in 1827-1829 by the scientists who invented the technology at levels below and above 400ppm to levels as high as 574ppm. The Climate Change Alarmists PRETEND such measurements do not exist in the 19th Century and 20th Century, so they can proceed to PRETEND there was a rapid change where in fact the changes were always there and occurring naturally long before the Industrial Age occurred. They lied to you, and you are gullible enough to swallow the fraud by hook, line, and sinker. The same is true with regard to their fabrications of imaginary temperature data. The Climate Change Alarmists PRETEND there has been an extraordinary and artificial change in temperatures, when in fact they have never actually observed or measured any such rapid or large changes. They faked the data.

You cant really control the wind, you can harness its power, but you cant control it. Things will get worse and we need to build and farm with that in mind. There are areas of the world that are inundated almost all the time while others cant get rain to save their crops. Its far fetched and many will say impossible, but why not create a global drainage system. Water that is inundating one place could be piped to other places that are dry, thereby keeping the flooding down while using the water in places that need it.
The human race has to stop this separatism, we are all in this as one. None shall be spared if we dont act together. Men in power that cling to keeping that power need to go, the old ways are going away, we are one planet. The idea of one nation lauding over another is absolute nonsense at this point. Your nation may hold out a little longer than your neighbors, in the end however your fate will be the same. You will only suffer longer. The only way for the human race to save its self is to come together as the people of one planet and work together with the same goal same projects same rules.
No more nations and borders and politics of varying kinds. The basic tenets and laws should apply globally. Why do we fight? for power, resources, greed, and religious ideology , to say we are superior. superior to what? When we all die and you cant take it with you anyway, the grave knows no rich man or poor man, the earth cares not for your status.
People talk through history as if a global community without nations is a bad thing, a conspiracy theorist wet dream. But is it really, or is it one step closer to peace and care for all. Those in power that have spent millennia selling the people the ideal of we must be more powerful and conquer others , have only done this out of their lust for wealth and power over us all. Its a bad habit that needs to stop, it is no longer relevant in the greater scheme of things. The old ways must die so the future may live.

The first sentence, "Wind is the driving force behind our weather.", is not true. Wind is weather, as is rain and clouds and snow and sleet. The Sun is what drives weather and it is the Sun that creates that temperature and pressure difference you say creates wind. So the very first sentence is a total corruption of the facts.
A few sentences further on, "But climate change is altering wind patterns." According to geologic and historical records, the estimated rate of climate change is about 0.5 C., over a period of time of about, 30 years. The average temperature change between night and day is about 15 C. / 12 hours. The seasonal change is about 30 C. / 6 months. And then there are all the other conditions like Latitude, geography, flora, cloud cover and on and on, all the things that effect the temperature at any geographical location, at any point in time. In other words, climate change is just about the most insignificant factor, in any weather event and it is impossible to estimate the climates influence, anymore than we can estimate the influence of any other individual factor and weather events tell us nothing about climate. To suggest that climate change is the cause of wind pattern changes, is pure nonsensical propaganda!
    And it deteriorates from there...

Have we crossed the point of no return in terms of damaging the planet? There is no such point. We need to trust that our thought, which is our greatest quality, can change nature. We only need to understand the direction to which we should aim our thoughts. What should we think about? What condition or state should we aspire to and ask for?
In order to save our planet, we should think about positive human connections. That is, how can we, in our connections, keep nature safe? How can we all together protect our world? If we truly wish to better our planet, then we should see people holding a concern for how to positively connect everywhere that we look.
It has nothing to do with recycling or other activities that we commonly associate with as being sustainable. If we come closer to and consider each other, that we will reach an entirely organic, perfectly connected and round state, then the negative forces will disappear from the world.
We need to understand that if we start thinking better about each other, then the planet will recover from all harm, because our thoughts are the strongest force in nature. Likewise, our negative thoughts about each other are entirely to blame for damaging the planet. That is why the more we recycle and invest in energies and activities that we commonly think of as being sustainable, the worse our planet becomes. Nothing will work to benefit us until we reach a state where our attitude changes toward each other for the better to protect and improve our planet..

imagine if we'd all dedicated our lives to a religion/spiritual movement to work with the earth, worship the sun, and ultimately be stewards of nature instead of seeing it as God's punishment toward us for our sins. maybe other cultures such as India has done this, but America & others use every drop of resources with no remorse.

10 seconds into the video ...and I have to write this comment... Already from the very first sentence DW shows that they don't know what they are talking about : " Wind is the driving force behind our weather"... ....NO IT IS NOT ....this is just pure ignorance.
Wind is the result and not the cause due to the thermophysical properties of the atmosphere. It is temperature (heat) and temperature differences in the atmosphere that cause movement of air / pressure differences / wind.

the Govt is not explaining that we are in sun cycle 25 and that the extreme weather is due to a global cooling due to the sun cycle reaching a maunder minimum which is proven historically. We started this period since 2019. The earth and the sun are both polar shifting which leaves our earth magnetic field open in areas and anomalies over the ocean affects ocean heating and cooling, affects volcanism, floods, earthquakes, droughts this is the earth doing what it does. The Elbe, Rhine and Wese, retain what became known as “hunger stones”, which bear grim warnings for those unfortunate enough to lay eyes on them. One stone on the bank of the River Elbe, in the Czech Republic town of Decin, has emerged this year. "if you see these weep" . The Govt had time to prepare but did not prepare the people only preparing for themselves and leaving us vulnerable they used covid 19 to physically step away from the public view.

I was talking about how they alarmist are trying to pretend that the weather is changing more than it has ever done so in the past, in order to gin up more fear so they can destroy our civilization and build a dictatorship modeled after the soviet union, but world wide. Why should that not be the plan since the soviet union's KGB created the plan they are following.

It isn't even a matter of citizens. Illegal aliens might not belong here, but they are still people. Visitors from other countries are not citizens, but they are people too. We do not want people to die of hurricanes and storms, but it does happen. IF that is what you meant by unfortunately, then good, but you did not say anything about it. IF you mean its unfortunate that *fewer* are dying, then yea, that is not a good thing.

Geoengineering is causing the abrupt changes in the climate. It is also responsible for the death of necessary microbes in the soil affecting moisture uptake in the trees. How much toxic metal can the trees stand before they weaken and cause bark beetles to proliferate? There is no legitimate discussion about the climate without factoring in weather modification.

@Bruce Frykman Cool. We are adding about 2.1 ppm of CO2 per year and increasing. We want/need to get below 350 ppm and are at about 425ppm (plus methane and NO2). 1ppm equates to about 7.82 gigatons of CO2. So how many trees to just remove the 16.442 Billion tons of CO2 we are adding each year?

Excellent point. I was surprised that the United Nations IPCC report on climate change doesn't even talk about methane from thawing permafrost in Siberia and Alaska and Canada! Seems like a huge oversight. It's gotta be on purpose, right? For some political agenda, right? The science is ringing alarm bells about all that methane, because it's 25-80 times more potent greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide. (!) Maybe because it's GAME OVER, but they don't want 8 billion people to panic about it?
