Where do you even begin with this financial disaster of a girl? A mountain of bad decisions and now she's upset because she can't deduct the interest. At 18 I sure knew NOT to sign up for crippling debt especially for a useless degree. She's got 3 jobs and not one of them come even close to requiring a college degree. She's also relegated herself to a lifetime of being single as no man is EVER going to sign on long term with that debt load. Fortunately, women are equal and no man has to pay for her mistakes. Choosing a major to invest a large chunk of your time and money into studying is like picking a stock to invest in. You seriously need to understand the industry, future prospects and opportunity in the field to see if there's a payoff before risking your life's savings. Most importantly, governments should not be providing loans for unusable/risky majors. Now someone has to pay those loans, and that person is the student - it should not be anyone else.

At some point in our society we will have to do something about the student loan crisis because the next recession will be because of student loans. I made the same mistake when I got out of high school. I was never told the total amount i would owe after I got out of college. The lady I spoke with said, I'd have a low monthly payment that wouldn't hinder me in the long run. Well i'm 29 now with $50,000 in debt with an Associates degree in Criminal Justice. When your degree cost more than what you make a year in salary, that is a big problem. the debt is my fault and I should have asked questions but being 18 and going to college, you really don't think to much about the total cost of the loan. they need to start teaching life skill classes when you're a senior in high school that way you have a better understanding of what to expect. If i could do it all over again, i'd never go to college. School shouldn't be free but it should not be crazy expensive either.

The impression that I get from some American young people is that they all want to have their cake and eat it too.
People take for granted perks like low prices and a stable economy (in comparison with the rest of the world) while paying low taxes.
But at the same time expect public services and institutions to solve all of their problems.
Doing research on what you're signing up for BEFORE doing it is a basic adult skill. It's like no one is dependable anymore and everything is someone else's fault.

Britney: You should consider becoming a teacher in a K-12 under-privileged school. If you do this, the government will forgive your student loan debt. However, you might need a credential to do this - if you live in California. Secondly, in some states, the government will erase your student loan debt if you become a social worker who works with under-privileged children and teenagers. But, I must warn you. Working with under-privileged children and teenagers is not an easy thing to do. You need to have thick skin and lots of patience. However these aforementioned programs were in existence during the Obama and Bush administrations. I don’t know if the aforementioned programs are still in existence under the Trump presidency, but it’s still worth looking into. Good luck.

So she went to a private research university that costs 56k per year to study two humanities subjects that aren't employable. She should've just gone to community college and a public in-state university if she wanted to do that. She probably would've finished with around 20k in debt for the entire 4 years which isn't that hard to pay off in a short time. This is just another case of someone studying something that doesn't have a return on investment at a school that is unnecessarily expensive.

Why would she even go to college for Drama and communications? better yet an expensive University. Lord have mercy. HEADS UP: Do NOT go to college for majors like that where’s though, you are definitely not gareenteed to make any money after college. It’s a pointless major. Major in something that you KNOW you will make good/great money after college. Choose a school wisely, meaning don’t go for a real expensive University unless you have a scholarship to go there. That is just my tips. Also, it would be BEST to start off at a Community college. It is a lot cheaper. Apply for scholarships, do not take out unnecessary STUDENT LOANS. Only borrow if you NEED it. Only take out what you NEED. Not what you WANT. Just remember, you WILL have to payback EVERY loan you took out.

My plan to stay debt free:
    - File FAFSA (if loan option is in my package, don’t take it)
    - Make time to apply to small scholarships ($100-500) during senior year of high school
    - Make a resume, apply for federal work study OR
    - Find a part time job during college
    - Do a summer job after graduating high school
    - Go to a cheap college (if it’s a 4 year school, find a school that is $10k per year)
    - Don’t spend money on unnecessary things (don’t go Starbucks to study, go to the library with a thermos of tea)

Love her. This is what the majority of graduates are going through.. having to work 3+ jobs and surviving on side hustles. The system is a joke. Students are sold at a young age to make it into top schools. It’s not her fault. Why does college have to be so expensive? Education is a business in American and it needs to be a right. This woman is ambitious and educated.. she should to be punished for this. Education is free or cheap in other countries like Germany where people also get stipends and free healthcare. The ivermnwt there actually cares about me well being and education of its people. Our government needs to change and prioritize education and humanity over money war and greed.

Meanwhile in Finland, we pay no tuition fee whatsoever for any higher education. We get an allowance from the government of about 200-250 euros per month, plus additional benefit to cover rents (of about 300-400 euros per month depending where you live). On top of that you can either work or get an additional student loan (at max 650 euros per month). While many opt out taking the loan option, it's really reasonable with currently less than 1% interest and if for some reason you can't pay it back the government will do that for you. And you can negotiate the monthly payment with your bank (mine is going to be around 250 euros per month and I would be debt free in about 8 years).

Education and major studies have always been expensive even years ago, it's just that before people were more focus on agriculture, transportation, and farming stuff which mostly were learned on the job place..Studying is a good way for institutions to make money as well cause specially in north america they force you to study before giving you a job, as in lots of countries the fact of learning a trade on the job, from your parents or just by yourself is still very well in use and is still accepted by companies as a tool for recruitment .. If you have years of experiences it is enough for you to apply for a job.. Not as a surgeon, Lawyer , dentist etc but most of trades jobs, manufacturing jobs, or mostly hand skills jobs which is a major plus ...i think it's one of the major reason why people get in school debt very easily as they don't have the choice . Unless you come from a rich family or at least a family who were smart enough to save for their kids studies..

I earned my AA at a community college. I earned my BA at a private school. I earned my MA at a state university. Next year, I will be going out of the country to earn my PhD. 1. Research your major!!!! 2. Be sure you as a student are ready for the hard work of college. 3. Make sure you are choosing a major that you are good at, that you love, and that you have researched regarding possible careers for that major. 4. If you can go to a community college, do so! Nothing wrong with a community college. Just look at me and plenty other people. 5. Don't expect to get your dream job after graduation, but that does not mean you should get discouraged. Search for any job that is even somewhat related to your career. 6. Never stop applying to jobs until you are hired for the position you want! I applied to like 30 jobs every 4-5 months. Now I do not need to apply to jobs anymore since I am moving away next year.
