I had a student loan from private loaner with variable interest, which continued to increase but never go down. Now matter how much I paid monthly l, my loan kept on getting bigger. Fortunately l, I was able to refinance from another private loaner with fixed and lower interest. I will pay off my loan in 12 yrs by using 1/3 of my monthly paycheck for paying student laon .

Pro tip: Don't pay ANYTHING. if you can't get loan forgiveness, or in the future the government doesn't allow bankruptcy, save all your money even out of the bank if you have to and then negotiate a complete dept payoff for a fraction of the total.

Pay your loans off quick, people. The IRS can take from you what ever they want when you owe and the Federal Government can demand repayment just as well. What happens when you can't pay and you become a target for the next major financial crisis. These two debts are the only two debts that can never be wiped out and whom the government can utilize any tactic they deem appropriate in getting that money from you.

I can’t believe this. You presumably live in California, live in a pretty nice house, obviously went to a 4 year private school, and you have the audacity to call congress to have the government bail you out. You’re in this situation by your own volition. You should have gone to a college you could have afforded, and majored in something marketable. Stop complaining and blaming others for decisions you made yourself.

How do you not know about student loans with so much resources at your disposal talking about it? Boggles my freakin mind. I went to community college and worked full time so I didn't accrue debt then. I got a couple of scholarships and grants for the last 2 years at a university. Left with 2500 in debt in which I paid off in 6 months after finding a job. I have a degree in the STEM field and now make 73k a year at a journeymen level for my position. How is it that someone as naïve as I was able to take the time to really research my field and school loans and yet these people complain about making really bad decisions? They don't even take responsibility for those actions.

Okay so if the major is "useless" why even have it in the first place. We are told to follow our dreams then we get mocked and laughed at for making a "useless" decision. We trust that the universities have our future in their best interests. Why would someone create a degree knowing it had no actual value? Surely this kind of evil doesn't exist. Surely they wouldn't set us up for failure. The slim amount of majors that are "useful" are not necessarily what everyone is interested in or passionate about. So should we pick a more 'useful' major even though it doesn't interest us? Do we invest in a future with more money, a future that satisfies bills? Or Do we invest in a future that satisfies our hearts and we actually are enjoying the work we do? Is there a middle ground? Which narrative do we follow? On the contrary, It is now apparent that with said "useful" majors, the staggering debt still places said student that majored in said "useful" subject to still be in a setback trying to pay off loans in our current economy. WE AREN'T TOLD OTHER OPTIONS DURING HIGH SCHOOL, It's either you go to college to be successful or join the military. Naturally, people will choose something that they are interested in if everyone HAS to go to college...And if you don't know what you want to do yet, that sucks go to college and "find yourself". Meanwhile you are blindly, stacking up debt that you don't realize the full ramifications of until it's too late and the only thing you will find is a headache and burdensome bills. I say all this to say, some of these comments are incredibly judgmental.

  • Hana Andrea Wilder

The REAL Issue is not the choice in Degree, the Issue is the Amount of Legal Principal for originally borrowing the money. These comment sections disturb me because this is a Real Reality for so many of Us!

  • Sophie Francis

Wow! That's very expensive. In England you only start repaying your loan once you've graduated and you're earning more than £25,000 a year. After that, you'll pay back 9% of anything you earn over £21,000 every month. For example if you earn £27,00 you'll pay back £15 a month. It gets scrapped after 30 years and if you go below £25,000 you stop paying. I am glad I'm a UK citizen.
I know some countries don't have any fees but still, it's pretty good. Scotland has no fees for everyone but those living in the UK but not Scotland idk about Wales or NI.

Just for shits and giggles......... If she took that $48k and invested it long-term in an index fund that averages 11%/year and maxed out her Roth IRA with $6,000/year that she would've been paying in interest on her student loans she would not only have an additional $1,584/ year of freed money but would have $6,883,634.65 after 40 years of growth. She will probably instead be still paying off her student loans in 40 years because nobody taught her how money works.
This is exactly why college DOES NOT SET YOU FREE. It enslaves you for the rest of your life. Please stop telling your children that college is the answer. I promise you that it is not.

I’m an Indian resident planning to go to USA top notch business schools next year
Right now I’m preparing for my Gmat
However I’m concerned about the loans and weather the job market can give a good return on investment
Google says that business schools alumni earn an average of $100000 a year
I assume that it would be enough to repay a $60k-$70k loan that ll include my tuttion and rent.
I don’t know about the risks involved or what could go wrong, I assume a top business school(top 20)
Would be enough for a good return on investment
Any expert or student living in USA can throw some light on this matter?

If you end up over $100k in debt without a highly prestigious degree that will pay you that much a year out the gate - you’re not doing it right. My sister got a PHD in chemistry with only $2000 in loans. I was worried I wouldn’t get scholarships like she did but I have and my first year of college is fully paid for.
And seriously - who pays over 100 grand for a drama and communications degree???
And I get to the end of the video - the whole video was a jab at the GOP? Really? People have been having this problem forever and Democrats haven’t helped anything either.

This is why we need to require financial literacy classes for high school students. No one should take out that much in loans for an undergrad degree, period. Everyone should be able to get a bachelor's with less than $20k in student loans. Go to community college and pay your way though an associates, then transfer your credits to a cheap in-state and get your 4 year degree, if that's what you have to do. If you can't afford the minimum payment, take a fun class at a community college to put off payments without destroying your credit.

I heard a lot of poor decisions being made, I understand it’s sucks but it’s not everyone else’s fault.
I have two degrees, the first was pretty much worthless due to automation. So I am aware that some things are out of your control however not wasting money and getting a degree for a good job should have been her focus.
Even now she is selling her clothes to make up for financial issues. What is she going to wear to an interview? To work? Selling assets to pay short term debt will not save her long term.
She needs to find/learn skills to get a better job. Her job choices are the problem.

Go to college to "major" in a field that's NOT going to benefit you in your actual career is a major NO NO. And what's there to not understand about loans? You borrow it, you pay it back. People act like its free money. If it's not a loan for necessities such as house, business or maybe a car, something that's gonna be immediately beneficial then it's probably not a good idea.

This is a failure of both parenting, and the school systems. Parents should be the best line of defense on informing their kids all of the implications and consequences for taking out a student loan. High schools should be better at teaching the mathematics behind the loans, and how it has drastically negative financial impacts on the young person's life. We also need students to not go into so much debt for degrees which have next to zero available positions in the job market. There are so many factors this video points to, and we all need to be responsible and careful in order to reduce this financial crisis.

I had over $80,000 in student loan debt and I didn't know there were programs out there to reduce (or even eliminate your debt for some professions!) I found this out by listening to Dave and I went with a recommended debt relief company and they helped me reduce my debt from 80,000 to 10,000 based on my income and profession! I paid that off in less than a year and now I'm debt free. If you want to find out if you qualify you can give them a call right now to see if you qualify their number is 1-844-445-1057 I suggest everyone give them a call and see if you qualify. It literally takes less than 5 mins to find out and they will help you through the process. It was a huge weight off my shoulders once I found this out and now I'm actually putting money towards my retirement and sleep so much better knowing I don't have that looming debt over my head.
