why not just charge more and give back whatever you think it's appropriate? More money = more "respect"

Show your financial statements.. You're also making IDclips videos to make money and pitch your story. Sorry most of you are suspect with your crazy outlandish stories of Being successful.. Most of you are full of crap.. Because you make money off IDclips videos.. So unless you produce some type of financial documents that show that you make over a $100000 per year doing your own thing I don't believe you.. Anyone can say anything... All of your philosophies will make you broke in the future you might get a few bleeding heart liberals far left crazies who believe in your so called standards.. But ultimately you will screw yourself with your so called ideology

I completely agree with you, after 10+ years working in advertising projects started to turn into quantity over quality. One year ago I WAS completely burned out due the lack of planning and complete lack of respect for the deadlines and overall quality. Im in a complete refresh and restart phase in my carrer, had to let go 20+ employees, a partner and fiancé. I really feel free to have the opportunity to re think the way I want to work and live my life. Any tips?

    My checklist:
    1. Financial reward? Wait, people pay for this kind of stuff?
    2. Portfolio? I NEED a lot more stuff worth adding to my portfolio!
    3. Travel? It's my dream to travel, so, of course I'll NEVER get a job that let's me travel. FML
    4. Good Company? I don't give AF, I just want to work in this field!
    5. Proud? If i can focus on the project and not have to work 10 hours on my day job, I'd be able to make something good enough to be proud of!
    6. Good People? Probably not, and I'm probably not a very good person, so....

If you are hiring multiple editors that is almost all your budget right there. Im an AE in Los Angeles and I know a few editors who are making about 1,000 per day. 100,000 is super small for how many videos they want.

    Fantastic advice, Chris.
15 videos in 30 days with 5-7 revisions sounds like a nightmare scenario more than a dream, and that was clearly your takeaway once those red flags started smoking.
Such jobs end up zapping your energy, crushing your soul, and having you wishing you'd said No, which can be one of the most powerful things you can do. Kudos to you for doing that.
I used to do TVC's for a company that would always ask for "ideas," hire me for one, steal a bunch, and then call again when they'd depleted other companies. It's refreshing to hear you have such stellar standards based on substantial indicators, and I wish you continued success. You deserve it.

Some people might understand this but this is prospecting. You don't want to work with anyone who do not align with your ideal customer check list. People who will do any job for money have no principals nor have they've developed the right culture for what their brand stands for. This isn't just a job many people who don't see that fail.

I must be honest, we were once in a similar situation, for even more than that, it was into seven figures overall. We took it and it was a mistake I've regretted for a long time.

  • BrandonShoots! Video Production

Very wise words Chris. Thank you so much for sharing this with all of us. I'm sure we all needed to hear this experience as I know many might find themselves in similar situations but feel like they can't say no to the green. I'm sure we all have to at some point do a job here and there that we're not really into (if you can help it hopefully not) but at the end of the day money is not everything and i my opinion doesn't trump your peace of mind. Hearing how you descried the potential client..it sounds like you all made a good decision for sure. Lots of red flags as you said.

  • NoizyCloset
